S120 & G7X visual side by side.

When I was doing research for my Christmas gift to myself, I happened upon several sites with discussion regarding how the G7X was similar in size to the S120 and others calling it the "S-line" killer etc.

So I now have the G7X and am having some buyers remorse in the sense that while it may still be "pocketable", its not as truly pocketable as the S120. Were with the S I could easily fit it in my jeans pocket, either front or back; I'm finding that the G is a tighter and uncomfortable fit. Yes I can still carry it around, but what I've gained in sensor size, I've lost in comfort. I figure I would post these images here for others who might be in the same boat and trying to decide whether to upgrade to the G from the S or trying to decide between to the two in the truly pocketable category.

For now I'm happy with the purchase, but after about a weeks time, have yet to see a true advantage or find my money's worth in the +-$300 price difference.

Well it has been a while, how does the image quality difference compare.
I would think the larger sensor is much better than the S120, but if the real world difference is minimal, my money is better spent on the cheaper and smaller S120. I doen't desire +$300 remorse.

Your thoughts?

Thanks for this. I have the SX50 HS that I use a lot for nature pics, but wanted something smaller for everyday, indoor and travel use. I have been considering either the S120 or the Sony RX100 (similar to the G7X in size and sensor I believe).

While I love the rave reviews about the Sony RX100, I keep thinking that I really want a pocket camera and the S120 suits that while the slightly larger cameras with better sensors are just enough larger to make them less pocketable.

I guess everyone has a different opinion about what is pocketable or not. For me it boils down to can I easily fit this in my jeans pocket, or a something like a suit jacket pocket without being bulky. When I have my G with me, its usually in its case and on my waist/belt (through the belt loop of the case). Its otherwise in my backpack. If I happen to be wearing cargo shorts, it would be kicking around in the cargo pocket, but definitely not comfortably. It's a little brick in comparison to the S120. It would fit in a pocket of some loose slacks or something if the like, but not comfortably or as inconspicuously as the S.

Couldn't agree more, I got my G7x a couple weeks ago and while I like it.
I would not call it pocket-able.

While it is much smaller and lighter than my 6D and 40 stm
the physical action is putting it in my front jean pocket and walking around it near impossible.

I decide on it for it's f1.8-f2.8 aperture.
The S120 stops down quickly to f5.6 while zooming.
I wanted more subject separation.

The G7x spends the day in my hand via a wrist strap for caution, or in my backpack.

Thanks for this info. I've also been looking at getting one of these two models. I already have a G1x which I hardly ever carry because of the size, and I did have an S95, which I could take everywhere. Think I'll probably go with the S120.

I chose the G15 because it has a hotshoe.

I hate to correct you on gear you own, that I don't, but the G7X appears to have the same f/1.8-2.8 variable aperture range as the G15. The larger aperture (than my SX260HS) was a big plus for both G7X and G15. I was torn between the much larger sensor of the G7X and the hotshoe of the G15. Well, to be honest, a refurbed G15 was less than half the price of a new G7X. If the G7X had a hotshoe, I would have spent the extra money for the larger sensor.

You are correct. I was referring (mentally) when comparing the G7X to the smaller S110 or S120 camera with their zoom apertures of f5.9
With that smaller sensor size they show a larger DOF than my G7x or your G15 at 100mm FL and f2.8

I would have chosen the G16 if it was not for the larger physical size.
If they made a S130 camera with the same specs and size as the S120 but a fixed f2.8 aperture
I would get it immediately.

The G7x is good for a bag or your wrist, not your pants pocket.
The same reason I don't own a Iphone 6 +
Great screen size, but my phone is in my front pocket all day and night when I am off work.
