hi all
is there an external hard drive out there that I can download a card straight to the
device?

There are quite a few. The best is the Hyperdrive ColorSpace.

+ 1 for these units. Mine has been very reliable. Been using it a lot less for travel recently though as I picked up a used 11 inch MacBook Air for about the price of the Hyperdrive.

NEXTO DI ND2901 works well for me.

Western Digital has a pretty cool newer solution if you use SD Cards. They've started making a wireless HD that can accept SD Cards.
