I think my sigma might be front focusing a bit...

There's not a whole lot of videos with lens in this thread, so I thought I'd post one.
It's pretty brutal though.
I guess you could mute it or something :/

I loved it :) \m/

One thing i noticed about my 30mm compared to say the 50mm f1.4 (canon) is the focus ring is way, way stiffer and makes it virtually impossible to do any smooth video work. Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks!

I haven't really tried to focus while filming yet, but I wouldn't mind the focus ring being a bit smoother.

Hi everyone. Perhaps a dumb question... Would the focus micro-adjustment feature available in 7D be able to compensatye for any front/back focus issues with a Sigma lens? And if so, would 7D actually register the settings selected for a third party lens (i.e. non-Canon). I've never actually done any micro-adjustments, but am curious whether this would work in case the 30 f/1.4 has some issues... Or would it be easier, or more recommended to send it over to Sigma for service? Thank you for any input.

My 30mm lens is back from calibration.

How much was the calibration? Did you have to send in your body?

Mine was practically brand new. I believe sigma offer 4 year warranty here in the states. They said they can calibrate the lens by itself, but if you can afford to let go of your camera for a week, it's best sending the body along as well since calibration could be slightly different from body to body.

Yes, the MA function on your 7D should be able to compensate for front- or back-focusing issues - assuming it doesn't need correction beyond the limits of your MA. I've read a few posts here where even +20 or -20 wasn't enough, so they either sent it in or returned it.

I'm saying this assuming MA on your 7D is the same (or better than) the MA on my 50D.

My Sigma 30mm was front focusing a bit. I had to spend some time with it, and do several tests (which I kind of enjoy anyway), and found that +4 MA was the best setting for me. I actually started a thread here about it, and posted some photos.

As it is now, it's very sharp - honestly it seems about as sharp as my 60mm macro, especially stopped down a bit. It's still very sharp at f/1.4, but I'd almost say it's crazy sharp at f/2.0 and smaller.

So, I'd recommend trying to fix any focus issues by using the MA function on your camera before sending it in to Sigma.

I'm not sure what you mean by "actually register the settings", but it works.

Jason
