Anybody had experience with either of these? I think I've narrowed down my next tripod to one of these. They seem to be fairly similar on paper with the 055 looking a little beefier, but I'm looking for people's experiences with them. I'll be using it mostly for Astro shots and possibly in a small home studio in the future.

Not exactly what your looking for but, about 6 years ago I asked about Manfrotto tripods for my 40D and got quite a few suggestions some of which were out of my range cost wise.
I decided on the Manfrotto 055MF4 Pro MagFiber tripod.
I still use it today for my 6D and the 40D.
Are there better? Most likely but at greater cost.
Not a light weight tripod but I've found mine to be very solid. The camera stays where it is locked into.

Jeff, the 055 series is a lot sturdier than the 190 series. Go for one of the 055 leg sets and you won't be sorry.

055 is a pretty solid tripod. I've even taken it apart to fit in check-in luggage. If you won't mind lugging it around (when scouting locations) as weight is a big complaint (from what I've read) then it's a good tripod on a budget. Your savings can go towards a better ballhead. ;-)a

I have both. A Wimberley WH101 lives on my 055s and a manfrotto 498 ballhead modified with a swiss-arca clamp occupies the 190s.

on a windy day, I'll attach a stone bag to the 190s for additional rigidity.

not the most elegant sticks, but they work.
