Nice shot Keith! Which lens do you use more for air shows, the 100-400 or 300?

I use both about equally. The 100-400 is on one of the 50Ds for the wider shots. I have experimented with keeping the 1.4x on the 300 and the 70-200 on a 50D. This combo has been working well for overall coverage of formation work and those really long shots.

These were taken today using my 300 + 2X extender on a Mk4 in very poor light. The 300 on the Mk4 is remarkable. I just love the combo.

Thanks for looking.

How much MA did you use to get your 2x to work with the MK4? I cannot get my 3002.8, 2x and the MK4 to get sharp images. Any tips?
Thanks
Kurt

It's fairly easy to hand hold. It's also light enough to use a decent (but not super expensive) ballhead.
If I'm not using mine on a Gimbal or 'Frotto 393 head, I'll use it on a manfrotto ballhead that I normally use for landscape stuff.

Congrats on the purchase. It's super super super super sharp. My favourite lens.

Thanks for your feedback AdamJL
I must go through a learning curve with this lens. Only had it two days now and have only done some test shots in the garden. It looks like if it is sharper on f/7 than on f/2.8. I will be going on a holliday trip in two weeks time and then I can realy play with this:) lens.

Kurt, I cant imagine what is causing the problem I just popped the 2X on and it was spot-on from the word go. Have you tried a 1.4X on your Mk4 ? If so did that work OK ?

It almost looks as if the duck is hovering in midair. Great capture.

My 1.4 is tack sharp.. The 2x I have MA -8 and its still OOF... I had it to Canon and they say its fine? I broke down and bought a lens align thing and I'm going to work on that this weekend.

That seems most strange. Has anyone else tried your 2X or have you used it on another body ? Mine was rubbish on my Mk3. Have you checked the quality with the rig tripod mounted on a static subject ? If its OOF in that scenario then the 2X must be at fault. Can you borrow another 2X to try on your Mk4 ?

GrizzlyMan how did you go about doing the MA? Can give a brief on your steps and what you used to make the adjustments prior to getting the Lensalign?...Curious

Mine with the 2x is good. And my 500 with the 2x is really good

Yes I did try my friends 2x, same thing? I use a manfrotto gimbal head on a solid tripod with arca swiss mounts.

Methodical, I mounted a ruler saw horse at a slight angle. Put a peice of electrical take at center. Set up my rig 50 feet away. Shot via live view and made adjustments as I saw.

To date... With my 1dMKIV 3002.8 works alone and with my 1.4x.. Not with my 2x, way OOF.. My 500 4.0 works fine alone and will not work with my 1.4x and 2x.

I just bought a lens align but have not has a chance to use it. This will be my mission tomorrow.

This is the first time with any rig i have owned that my TC have not been tack sharp. I have taken everything in person to Canon service as a member of CPS and they checked everything together and found nothing as they say everything was to thier specs.. I'm at a loss and hoping that buying the lens align and using a differant techique will fix this.

This is why i have asked if anyone has had any luck with TC's on the mkIV.. Here is a sample of what I'm getting. I just had a chance to shot Short Eared Owls and 90% of my shots were OOF until I pulled the TC off and shot without. Any tips would be great,
Thanks
Kurt
