I'm still saving for this lens. The wait is killing me! So are price increases.

I've been saving for the past few months for the 500 f4L and after going though 116 pages here I'm having some doubts and think this lens can do it all. It's as sharp and sharp can be, It's cheaper, it's smaller and lighter and with a 1.4X and a 2X the possibilities are endless. Darn decisions!!! I think I'm going to stay away from the 400 f2.8 thread.

good. Even better than i have thought.
These lens is one year old and looks brandnew.
With the 1.4ii en 2ii converter included it's really a dreamcombo.

If you need 500mm as your base focal length, get the 500.

The 300mm + TC is good but not as good as native reach.

^^ Thanks for the info. I want to shoot wildlife, birds, planes and I do the occational arena gig where the 2.8 on a monopod would come in handy. I'd love to have both but can only get 1 long one for this year.

I would get the lens that best supports the paying gigs.

The play days don't need to be as good.

That depends on what you want to do with it. I like to walk around and shoot birds. The 300 with a 2x TC is easily hand-holdable and very portable, allowing for shots of small birds flitting in the undergrowth...

No way could I have got this with a 500mm. By the time I'd set up the tripod and gimbal head the bird would have flitted to the next patch of undergrowth.

Has anyone tried the 300 with a 1.4x or 2x MKIII? If so, any "real world" difference in focusing speed, sharpness, etc?

Hollis_f, does the autofocus still work on the 7D with the 2X and 1.4X?
