Taken with the 1.4x on a recent trip to the Kruger in South Africa. It was almost dark at the time so I had to resort to ISO3200, f/4 (i.e. wide open), 1/100s.

This morning I finally got around to doing ma adjustments on the 300 f2.8 lens I recently purchased from another member of the forum.

I had also re setup my hummingbird feeder yesterday so I was anxious to try my lens. Since my feeder is in full shade all the time, I tried setting up my flash on a light stand and fired it remotely with the camera. Because of the slow shutter speed, the flash created what appears to be a drop shadow because of the birds movement during exposure.

These were shot in ETTL with these camera settings.

camera-7D
mode-Av
iso-100
aperture-f5.6
shutter speed-1/100 and 1/125 respectively

Any thoughts on avoiding the movement blur? Would the best solution be to use a higher iso in order to increase the shutter speed? I was using pw flex remotes so I can use hss if necessary.

[Edit: I should add that the background is a block wall fence about three feet away from the feeder.]

Can you drop to f4 and up ISO to 800? That should give you 1/1000s

I guess I was concerned about introducing too much noise at iso 800. I was also concerned about the DOF being too shallow at f2.8 but here is a shot I just took at iso 200, f2.8 @ 1/1000th. This eliminated the 'drop shadow' look anyway.

I'll try using a higher iso too. Thanks for the suggestion.

QUOTED IMAGE

Not bad indeed.

Do you use a monopod for this sort of panning shot? I don't know how you manage to keep the subject so sharp and still blur the background. There was an F1 car running at my local airfield today and I must have taken 500+ (handheld) panning shots at various shutter speeds between 1/60 and 1/250 and not one is usable. (IS was set to Mode 2).

Hopefully, I'm improving my technique using flash for these little guys. I also think that like prop blur, it looks better if the birds wings aren't completely stopped in action.
