I own this version and also tried version II? It was hard for me me to really see any difference. Version II is slightly lighter in weight. The version II may be slightly better for video and does have the mode 3 IS. I did not go down the upgrade path to version II. I put the money toward a 600mm and I am keeping my 300mm.

In fact, i also not planning to upgrade this lens to version II with that damn Canon price, i just prefer to do like you, go to 400 2.8II or 600II as well, this older version mk1 of this lens is still strong enough for me on my 1DX or other cameras, so i better save my money for another glass important different FL than 300, just one day i will be able to sell this lens and get version II as i will have enough money for that without sacrificing other purchases.

The 600mm II is awesome and a great combo with the 300mm I just got my 600 & I could not be happier with my decision. You will get the best of 300mm to 1200mm with this combo. To me it is really perfect!

Sure, in fact the next tele i am thinking about to get is 600II, even more than 400mm even i don't shoot birds and i do shoot sports more, but that 600mm is a dream to own even just to keep looking at, and i most of the time buy a lens to force myself to use it if it is a gem amazing lens, hope that time when i buy 600 that i do start shooting wildlife and birds.

Did someone compare the performance of this lens (mk 1) with 2x tc mk 3 on a 1d4 and 1dx?

Well, i stop to do tests because i am not good at that, and all my tests are not that great interesting for many here, so i don't do it anymore. I have 2x mkIII and i have 1DX and this lens.

I was asking because I have mixed results using this combo with both 1D4 and 5D3. Since the 1Dx has the best and most accurate AF of the 3 camera's I was wondering if this would boost the number of keepers...

Below is a picture which I consider acceptable with 1D4+300 2.8 is usm and 2x tc.
