with a 2x II handheld

That looks very nice! I'm wanting this lens more and more. The biggest wish is a 400 2.8L IS, but its heavy. So a 300 2.8 with both 1,4x and 2x gives good results as far as I can see on some pics in this tread. And even better, not so heavy and can be handheld easier than the 400 2.8! I do a lot of motorsports and like to pan handheld.

Hi Kristian,

i made a mistake its a 2x III. :) have no experience with the 400 f2.8 IS but the 300 f2.8 IS is a stellar lens. takes TCs very well. autofocus will suffer more noticeably with the 2x but almost close to no slowdown with the 1.4. Its very handholdable but you do get tired after a while.

I have been looking at the 400 f2.8 IS mark 1 but the insane weight always puts me off. LOL

you got some great photos on your flickr!

f you look at my sig it states hoping for a 300 2.8. Well I finally have permission from the boss (wife) to look into getting one. I think I can reasonable go after either a used canon 300 2.8 L IS (around 3500) or a new sigma 120-300 2.8 sport. (around 3500).

I guess that I would try to get the used 300 2.8 L IS locally which might take awhile or the sigma via greentoe.

My primary purpose is shooting kids sports. Mostly soccer. I have been using a 100-400 but it can be pretty cloudy around here and then it gets tough…forget night games.

I would like to try to use it for birding (would buy a 2xextender) There are lots of opportunities for that around here (I live near the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers)

I have looked at the 300 L Is and 120-300 threads and everyone seems pretty happy with both lenses. I have rented the 300 2.8 L IS a number of times and have enjoyed it though I have never used the 120-300.

Thoughts?

I debated the same decision a year ago also coming from the 100-400. After trying a Sigma 120-300 I went with the Canon 300 2.8 IS. I only took a few shots with the Sigma so I know I didn't give it a fair test but I just felt more comfortable shelling out the cash for the Canon even without trying one first, The Sigma test shots looked ok but the guy at the camera shop said the focus would be faster on the Canon. I also felt like I knew what to expect from Canon quality wise. My copy works very well with a 1.4 II converter for everything including shooting eagles in flight. My copy takes good pictures with the 2x for baseball, batters in the box, and non fast moving stuff but the autofocus really slows down with the 2x converter. I had the 2x mkii and upgraded to the 2x mkiii, both perform the same as far as autofocus is concerned, crappy. I use mine for birding, baseball, football, soccer and wildlife on my 1D MKIV with and without the 1.4. I have no complaints and don't miss not having the zoom.
