So i promised my wife i wouldn't buy any more camera gear after buying my 5D Mark II for at least 6 months buuuttt......

I just bought myself a nifty!!! :)
In fairness she has 5 horses and i only have 2 cameras and 2 lenses. so i think it's only fair. A friend of mine was selling his unused canon gear so he can get a 7D Mark II and i got it at a bargain price of £45 ($70) including shipping.

Any recommendations for checking the lens over / cleaning before i start using it properly?

I would just give it a standard cleaning. Then take photos and if they come out great, don't worry about it.

If not, go from there.

Just put it on your camera and use it. In a couple weeks you won't even give it a thought.

Your signature lists 3 cameras and 4 lenses if you add the 50 ;) but OK. Have fun with it.

What Nogo said. Give it a once over, make sure its free of debris/gunk. Put it on and fire away.
