The bokeh is quite good, especially when shooting close-ups.. i think 35mm and 85mm is a good combo to later upgrade to L series of same focal length.

from your signature it seems you only use the 35mm f/2 on a full frame. what do you think your next upgrade, if any, will be? i also have (just ordered) the 85mm 1.8, and have been thinking about getting the 50mm 1.8, although im unsure whether i'll keep the f/2. im tempted to swap the f/2 for a 50 1.4.

are the 50mm long on FF for you?

im going to start putting it to use though, as i just got it yesterday.

thanks

Not directed at me, but I'll put in my 2ยข, anyway.

I don't find 50mm to be long on FF, but I find it to be less dynamic. 35mm gives me a little more room to place subjects in an environment in the hopes of telling a story.

You're right, currently i only have 35mm f2 on my 5D all of the time. But to tell the truth, i'm quite happy with it and for now don't feel that much need to get other lenses. I am mostly using my camera to capture my family and doing some landscapes, that's it.. Nearly 4 month have passed since i've been using 5d and 35mm f2 combo, and the only time when i felt missing a zoom lens was when i went to NY auto show, however I still managed to make a hell of a photo report with my 35mm lens. This is great focal length on a full frame, it just gives you so much space. And yes, you have to be doing your leg zoom quite often, but i got used to it quite fast and the ability to use f2 and sharpness given by the prime is a great reward.
As for my next upgrade, i can't decide between 2 lens: 24-105 f4L and 135 f2L. The first one will give me great FL zoom lens which i need badly when traveling. The last one is best outdoor portrait lens ever, and it would compliment my 35mm perfectly.

Regarding the 50mm, i wouldn't recommend it. It was quite limiting on a cropped 40d that i was using before, and i hated the inconsistent AF of the 50mm 1.8. You can ask anyone why has the Nifty Fifty and they'll say that it's AF just sucks. 50 mm 1.4 has better AF, it's true. But don't be fooled by that 1.4 aperture that is advertised, if you read the reviews carefully and watch the MTF graphs, you'll notice that your 50mm 1.4 is usable only from f2, unless you prefer soft images. So basically u'll be getting a 50mm f2.

As for 35mm f2, it's sharp wide open.
To justify my words, here are 2 URL's, check the MTF graphs for both lens:

Hope this helps.

i now have the 35mm f/2. i have to get used to it.

i had the 50mm 1.8 when i had a 30d about 2 years ago (before i sold it) and yes i know about the AF on the 50/ 1.8. i DO like the 50 1.8 though, but that's because i havent used many other lenses LOL so im limited.

so right now i have the 35 f/2 and the 85 f/1.8 should be arriving tomorrow. and, just like you, im also contemplating the 135L, but also the 70-200 f/2.8 (non-IS). i have not really decided which of the two i want more, i think i'll shoot with the two lenses i have and decide.

again, thanks for all the replies (whyfi included) as it did help me a lot.

happy shooting

here is my third shot with the lens, i will visit the scene tomorrow and try to tweak the photo (angle, exposure, less dirt, etc LMAO)
im still learning

congrats! hope u'll get used to it as fast as i did ) it's great capable little lens..
btw, are u shooting fullframe? i'm also thinking about 85mm 1.8, but i like the 135mm more from what i've seen here.. even taking into account it's higher price. However, i'm not sure on that focal length, kinda afraid it'll be just too long...

im shooting full frame yes.
im still learning this camera too, 1ds mk ii, lots of buttons (coming from a 30d which i had two years ago, this thing is like a spacecraft)

where in NY are you? if you are in line to purchase the 85mm 1.8 im sure i can find a way to ship it to you so you can test drive it for a few days. see how it feels on your full frame before committing.

but yes im spending some more time with the lens tomorrow. i have to do some test portraits soon too, see how it works out

This is a superb lens. I did notice quite a bit of horizontal CA at f/2 during my last shoot but nothing I couldn't fix in LR. The sharpness wide open was sick though.

Shoot indeliberately deliberate.
