I already complained about cheap CPL filtters in https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?p=17355964. One of two filters (an unknown brand, made in China) that I had was bad, the image sharpness went down considerably. The other one, Vivitar - just plain horrible, making it simply unusable. With each filter I clearly saw the image degradation on the back LCD, under maximum magnification.

Well, I came home from vacation, and downloaded the files on the PC. Imagine my surprise when I saw that the shot made with the "Made in China" filter was practically undistinguished from the one with no filter attached! I thought I mixed up files, but verified - the files were correct. What looked really blurry on the back LCD looked almost perfect on the big 27" computer screen under 1:1 view in LightRoom!

I shot in raw, and when opened in LightRoom I set everything to zero - no sharpening, noise reduction, or whatever.

What gives? Usually what may look good on the small LCD can show the defects under large magnification on the computer screen, but I got it the other way around! Any idea?

Did you flick back-and-fourth between the shots with filter and no filter on the LCD. If so they should look the same. If you were just looking at the 'with filter' shot and decided is was not acceptable on the LCD, then that may not be a good thing to do becasue a lot will depend on the in-camera settings like contrast noise reductions and sharpening.

Apart from that, I have no idea. I chimp quite a bit, especially with macro to make sure the shot is sharp and compare shots on the LCD and have never be surprised when I get the shots on the computer.

If you flick back and forth on the LCD and the look different, but look the same on the computer, that seems strange to me (although possibly with auto exposure or auto WB one could be deceived).

I made four shots. No filter, UV filter, "Made in China" filter, and Vivitar filter. On the LCD, when flipping back and forth, the first two looks identical (very sharp), the "China" filter looks blurry, the Vivitar - just junk. On the computer screen the first three look identical, the Vivitar - junk.

All the shots were done one after another, in raw, manual exposure, no sharpening or WB took place in camera. But even then, I could understand the opposite effect, looking decent on the LCD and bad on the computer. Really weird, seeing a bad shot on the LCD that looks great on the PC screen!
