Big Island Lava Flow

OhLook
insufferably pedantic. I can live with that.

A friend of mine said that the lava reminded him of bodies. I thought the same thing when I was shooting.

The twisty contours and the B&W palette remind me of old (centuries old) illustrations of the tortures of the damned.

These are some amazing images.

I hope things don't become dire for the residents there. It would be a shame. I suppose that's the risk you take though, living in an active area like this.

The flow continues very, very slowly. It took 20 years for the lava to finally engulf Royal Gardens and it just may take that long for it to engulf the Puna District if it does continue.

If you want to see 'Old Hawaii' on the Big Island, Puna District, my advice would be to make plans and see it now before the restrictions on travel and the flow make it impossible.

I'm not saying the sky is falling, just that recent history (Kapoho, Kalapana, Royal Gardens) show us that some of the most beautiful parts of the Big Island are now under as much as 70 feet of lava. The current eruption at Kilauea has been going on for over 30 years with no let up in sight.

We knew the risks when we moved here and I have no regrets. It has been great for my family and none of us would trade it in for anything. We do see the writing on the wall, though, and the time has come for us to set our sights elsewhere. We are fortunate in that we will be able to move off island. Many, many people will just simply be stuck with no place to go. Almost 10,000 people will be cut off from civilization if/when the lava cuts off the only real road in and out of the district. At that point, you will not be able to drive into the Puna District unless you have a special sticker on your car and your id shows that you do indeed live there.

Thanks Frank.

You know, I see this from both sides. I really would like to shoot some moving lava, just not in my own backyard. And I mean backyard. :-)

The front of the lava flow has been stalled for some time now and the National Guard has been dismissed for the time being.

Let's hope that the flow will just poop out and not widen, widen, widen.
