3rd combat tour coming to an end.. with that being said, going to rent a 6d and a 5diii to see which I would like to buy. Had my 7d for 4 or so years now, with all I have read the 7dii doesn’t seem like a viable ‘upgrade’ with the photos I have been taking. So I have come to the conclusion FF is where I need to be, and that’s what I will be rewarding myself with.

A pointless thread I know, but hey Happy New Year to everyone!!

In my opinion, there are two reasons someone would choose a 6d over a 5d Mark III. Very low light conditions or because you just can't convince yourself to spend the money for a 5d MkIII.

The newer features the 6d has such as Wifi and GPS are neat but not features you can't do without. On the other hand, the 5d has features that make it capable of taking sports shots, etc. For someone like me, these are something I like to think I can't live without.

Thanks for the reply!
This is why I want to rent each and see what makes me happy. I’m all for suggestions from everyone, posts of images each camera takes, and the wonderful reasons everyone has, but I need to see which I like. It’s me and my money.
I’m a one and done kinda person. Not that money grows on trees, but I have no problem spending where I’ll be happy.

I know you said you are thinking with your fingers, but what type of shooting do you plan to do?

Congrats on the forthcoming upgrade. I had my beloved 7D stolen and, as I had the money, I went for the 5DIII in large part because it was a FF camera in the 7D body. It just feels good in my (large) hands and that was important to me. That an an excellent AF system, which the 5DIII has.

Have fun testing them out.

well in the last four years, a few hundred thousand pics of everything. But only a few hundred of anything ‘fast’..such as sports, racing, birds, etc. Mostly up close people, automotive shows, stuff for my website, etc..

thanks !! really appreciate the kinds words..

Also I want my keeper rate to go way up, and actually have them in focus…. So tired of fuzzy pics.

(yes I’ve done this and done that, I don’t fault me or the camera, I fault being in a war zone and all the bumps/crashes that comes with it… I mean really, how many times can a camera body be subjected to being hit by an M4 while running, jumping on the ground, or getting in and out of armored vehicles anyways…lol )

As a son of a Retired Army Officer, we both thank you for your service and a safe return from your tour.
Like you I had great years with the 7D. Three years ago I was looking of adding a 5D Mark II. Unfortunately the Mark II did not have the Auto Focus system and other features that the 7D had. Once the 5D Mark III was announced, I knew it was for me.
Going back to a basic AF system of the 6D for me would be going back in time to my 40D.
Looking to add another 5D Mark III very soon.

Another vote for the 5DMKIII, I've owned 2 of them now and will hopefully be getting my 3rd and final one (if i sell this one the wife will kill me ) being without a camera for a few months I wanted to try and see what the 6D was like, I borrowed one and can't say I enjoyed it that much at all. Ok it may be better in low light, but with what I shoot thats a non issue. The 5DIII just feels better and all the buttons are where I like them, the 6D just didn't fit me well, I'm sure it would be a different story if I had sold several 6D cameras.

Just my opinion, id always go for a 5DIII over the 6D :)

Also a happy new year to you too. ;-)a

If you do not shoot anything fast, something that requires advanced AF, you will be happy with the 6D. Great in low light, lightweight, and considerably lower cost than the 5DIII. I got one and I am really happy with it. When I need fast AF and "reach", and only then, I use the 70D.

Thank you for serving the country. Happy New Year to you, and please stay safe.

you will be happy with the 6D. ...

Thanks for the happy new year’s wishes!!
It went off with a bang here. Literally. We had a few incoming rockets, so we spent some time in freezing cold temps in the bunkers..

Not sure what I’ll go for, the 6d or 5d. But I don’t want to reach for anything else for fast stuff. Want one body and that’s it. When I’m home I will be renting each body and see what suits my taste.

My 7d has taken me from p&s cameras to the point of knowing where I want to go. The 7dii threads keep telling me there isn’t a ‘happy group’ of users. And after waiting so many years for a second version, I’m not going to even try that body. I wanted to be a 7d fan, really did, but there’s already too many ‘focus issues’ threads. I have had ‘focus issues’ for almost 5 years now. I’d like to advance my photography skills, not band aid them.

why does the 5Diii have to be so pricey...

I think that is where I will be going, as the 6d has weird button layouts. I know that's silly, but I dont want to spend a bunch of cash and not be comfortable with it..

Why not try the 7dii? Or another 7d which are pretty cheap now. From what I have been reading as of late, the 7dii autofocus problem is a very small sample. Many people are getting great photos from the second version.

Heya,

Why are you not looking into a 1D Mark IV?

Very best,

A 1D4 will be cheaper than a 5D3.

I'm interested to see which one you decide on. I too have moved away from the 7D, since my kids are done with sports at this point in their lives.

I loved the size/weight/feel of the magnesium body of the 7D, which leads me to the 5D3 which is similar. On the other hand, it's hard to completely ignore the 6D, being so much lesser cost. But, with an estimated shutter life of 150k vs. 100k, I think I have convinced myself the 5D3 is what I will end up with.

Best of luck deciding. Thanks for serving- get home safe!
