Just spent the evening watching the Women's Figure skating competition, and noticed that there were many photogs on the side lines. White lenses-a-plenty... I wonder what lengths they're using. I've seen some photogs switching between 2-3 cameras depending on where the skater was on the ice.

Check out this guy, he's lugging around 50 pounds of equipment between events...he looks knackered:

Paul,

great catch, the article is most interesting.

“We’re all very competitive,” says Laforet. “But we all use the same cameras and lenses, and we have equivalent positions for the most part.
So what gives you an advantage as a photojournalist are your wits, your eye, the amount of research you do, and the speed with which you can deliver images.

So it's not all about having all those nice lenses

Best regards,
Andy

Not sure I want someone else editing my shots before I've had a go at them first. But that's some flash tech in play there :)

Just returned after many years hiatus from this forum. I was a bit of a prat before, if I ever offended you, I'm sorry

I've got all the equipment I need, now I just need inspiration :D

Okay, after seeing the real life of those photographers, maybe I'll think hard about wanting all that equipment all at once. :) Great article.

I too saw the guys on the side with their white lenses and they were all snapping away. If they don't shoot RAW + JPEG and with tons of memory, I'll eat my hat. Better than the days of film though. Can't imagine how many rolls they'd go through. I wonder what the price of one of those primo spots are? Think if we pooled all our money together we can send someone to represent the FORUM at the next Olympics in China?

Real quick would be that the images were sent via wireless connection WHILE shooting. Not having to remove the card, inserting it in a computer and downloading would be a definite advantage for pros I guess.

because theres no time to change lenses, and for optimal image quality he's probably using 99% primes, meaning he changes bodys a lot?

(just a guess)

I've just been looking at his site too - amazing work. I'm fairly new to the photography world, so his name is new to me, but it seems he's very well known...here he is picking up his pulitzer prize in 2002...:D

To do the job!
He probably tried using 1 body and a 28-300....

He's shooting sports , not weddings. Would be the ultimate reliable setup - always have the perect lens at hand (attached to a body) but if any problems , could just use a 400 instead of a 500 with a bit of extra cropping.

Geez...I almost feel sorry for the photographer after reading the article.

And it nearly made me swear that I'll never do photography on a professional basis. :D

But I can never say 'never', for who knows what the future will hold? But definitely, this is not the path I want to take in life.
