Very much as the title says, when the weather is a little drab, no shape or texture in an overcast sky and it's winter, so most landscapes look muddy and dull.
What do you go out and shoot oarlock for?

Heavy rain can be neat to shoot with a long shutter speed! In heavy fog, I go back to scenic shots I have done and get the foggy scene! Was on the Gulf Coast this past weekend and this was the weather. My Camera is with Canon right now, so these were taken with an iPhone 6+. It's hard to believe that the gulf is only about 25 yards past these trees!

This is something I have been thinking about.

I really want to go out with my new camera but when the weather is so/has been and will continue to be in rainy Ireland I find it difficult to find something suitable to shoot.

However when you see the creativity of the more experienced users on the forum you realize that you are not limited based on weather.

I have 9 days off from tomorrow evening and I'm looking forward to posting my first few pics on POTN for some constructive feedback.

looking out my window today i can't see any sky detail at all, and everything just looks dirty. Going to have to be inventive to find something

Sometimes drab weather is not a bad thing. Cloudy days give a softer light over details in the landscape, and can add a bit of an ominous look to a shot. These shots for example, I shot on cloudy/foggy days but I think the drab weather is a large part of why I like them. Look for tones, lines, shapes and other things to make an interesting subject instead of the sky or landscape details.

Grey, Drab dull days does not stop me from going out with my camera. I take pictures of anything. In winter I usually shoot in Black and white so don't need to worry about the lack of colours around.

I like shooting landscapes under cloud coverage. The skies act as a giant diffuser and you don't get the harsh shadows that you do from sunlight. Waterfalls are easier to shoot too, for me at least.

Landscapes, with something interesting in the foreground that can be accentuated with some off-camera flash.

The landscape in my area is bland -- no snow, bare trees, haven't seen a bird in days. So I looked to the sky at night. Shot Comet Lovejoy last night while skies were clear.

I believe it was Ansel Adams who said when it's overcast, look down. Perfect time and often perfect light for little things that you might otherwise overlook.

Digital gives us options that film didn't have. Shooting for detail in a grey (but not flat) sky and then printing a little dark can be moody and very effective. Increasing clarity or vibrance can bring life to dull colors. Conversely removing saturation can emphasize the mood. As an old 4x5 and 6x7 zone system user, I find digital B&W unsatisfying but a low saturation color image can be effective. I am attaching an image of an old dead tree near my home shot on a dreary day. I do not recall ever being able to get that level of detail in an overcast sky with chrome and I think it's a very useful mood.

Dull days don't have to stop us - just change what and how we see.

I've been slowly starting to "get" cloudy days -- and I don't mean dramatic clouds, but rather the uniformly grey, shapeless cover, like living under a Tupperware bowl (as Bill Bryson once put it).

I've tried to use the clouds/fog as a way to add a a sense of foreboding...

Or a sense of mystery...

I've found forests to look very nice under the diffused light of an overcast day, with no areas of very bright sunlight and very dark forest/undergrowth...

And sometimes, a black & white treatment works -- this was one of the most horrendous days weatherwise -- completely shapeless grey sky, no contrast, no details, no colour anywhere in the landscape -- a black and white conversion seemed to work well...

If you're near a city, cityscapes look good at night even under overcast skies -- the light reflecting off the undersides of the cloud can create nice colours in fact...

Great images FuzzSummit!
Drab wather is great for details, the grey sky is a good illumination - but I have to admit that I sometimes don´t want to go out to take photos.

Just shoot. There's no bad light or good light, there's just light. Sometimes some are more difficult than others, though! ;)

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.
