Don't know anyone around here who has it. Apple too pricey for a lot of people.

I am not hung up on a digit. Sorry if I come across as that way. They numbered it. Not me. That is the whole reason they are skipping 9.0 and going to 10.0. To make people feel they are getting more for their money. That came straight from them. They (Microsoft) themselves said it was an upgrade. To go back to 8.0 , 8.1 has to be removed and 8.0 restarted. In which case everything is restored to factory settings. You lose everything. Not as simple as just going in and removing an update.

But why run a bootable install partition if an upgrade is free? If they list it as free then it should just be Download then install. No need to put in a credit card info. I would have to agree with OP on this one.

Exactly

It is because Apple provides the download via their store and account ownership requires a valid credit card. Same for free apps on your iPhone, etc. It is just part of the model. For those individuals who believe that this is unfair or somehow compromises their right to privacy who otherwise haven't gained the realization that the fear of doing something causes much more anxiety than actually just doing it Apple does provide a way to set up an account without a credit card. I'm sure the OP has sufficent technical knowledge to find that solution via Google.

Um,,,,what's Google?

LOL...Just kidding.

Have you tried doing it?

Reason I ask is, you can create the account without the cc info. But as soon as you go to download something, it asks for billing info and will not let you do it without it.

I refuse to upgrade from 7. Which I just started using. I used XP forever. I hate 8 and hate Apple more, I had a few bad experiences from them. That being said I'm waiting for Google to commercially release their OS. They've been working on one for a while. Then I can integrate into the mother system wholly. We can become one... uh I mean yeah Google's great, been using them for years

Yes. I've been upgrading the same machine since 2009. Yosemite works very well even on the older hardware. My MBP came pre-installed.

Your store is the US store so there is an option to set billing to 'none'. I talked my nephew who lives in the U.S. through this a couple of months ago. I can't imagine it has changed since.

Win XP came out around 2000 and they just stopped supporting it so it will be about another decade before Microsoft stops supporting Win7.

I don't have my credit info for Apple and I can download all the apps. I created my account YEARs ago and I can download anything. I actually just downloaded two new apps this morning on my Apple iPhone.

The only problem is that google is still limited and not a lot of developers are developing programs for it. Programs like Photoshop and Lightroom are just a few that hasn't mentioned any works for Google OS.

8.1 and the patches afterwards are such an improvement over 8 I will always recommend that you spend the time and upgrade.

Just the fact that with 8.1 you can have windows boot straight to the desktop gives it a big improvement over 8. Everyone knows that for a desktop the start screen is most dumbest idea they have had since vista. 8.1 goes some way to correct this issue.

These forced upgrades should be free. MS always done them for for and they were generally called serivce packs. SP2 for XP for example included a large number of upgrades for new hardware that was coming up.

However needing your credit card details just for "free" software really isn't free. While they wont charge you the money for it. they are storing your info for their own needs. They need to understand that if you say free then you shouldn't have to provide any information to them what soever. Your information about who you are and what your interests are, are just as important as the cash you hand over.

At least MS and Google doesn't require CC info which is good for them. I do want to store my info with a app store.

Also with Win8 such a disappointment, Win10 is going to be free.

I've been using 7 for a while now. My nephew received a laptop for graduation and it had 8 on it. He had some major issues with it using up all 4 GB of RAM and it was slower than molasses. So he bought 7 and I "downgraded" his laptop and now it works great.

Personally, I'm a Linux guy but for some reason my system doesn't like the USB mouse with all of my HDD's attached. Sounds like a power issue but I have a 750 Watt PS in my system. Maybe I'll get a 1,000 watt PS and try that. But until then I am using Windows 7 and am enjoying it for now. Got lots of protection on it so I haven't had any issues with viruses or anything like that on it. My plan is to run Linux (possibly the Google version of it) and run Windows 7 in a VM so I can use Photoshop and Lightroom.

Just an idea for those that hate Microsoft but need it to run certain programs.

hahaha your funny, MS isn't going to release Win10 for free. it would be the first time ever they have done that.

At best they will have it the same price as Win8, which was about $20 if my memory is correct

Yea it's not that Win8 used all your memory it would have been bloatware than the manufacture put on the computer that would have been causing the issue.

Your right. It might not be free for everyone but for anyone who bought a computer with Win8 will get Win10 for free is what I meant.

A MS rep was telling me how Win8 was a fail and to make customers happy, win10 is going to be a free upgrade for those who have Win8/8.1.

No, as I recall it was actually a memory program that came with Windows 8 which brought the memory down to like 2%. It was running in the background and when I killed it the memory went to 80%+. It was definitely a MS thing. Can't remember exactly what it was.
