Your right. It might not be free for everyone but for anyone who bought a computer with Win8 will get Win10 for free is what I meant.

A MS rep was telling me how Win8 was a fail and to make customers happy, win10 is going to be a free upgrade for those who have Win8/8.1.

well I will be happy if they did. I use a home built computer and so went out and brought Win8. I also work in the indrusty so it does pay to know a thing or two. The good thing is none of my clients use Win8. (my clients are large business so an upgrade is not only a project but loads of time)

No, as I recall it was actually a memory program that came with Windows 8 which brought the memory down to like 2%. It was running in the background and when I killed it the memory went to 80%+. It was definitely a MS thing. Can't remember exactly what it was.

I have installed windows to many times to count, this includes everything from Win95 to 8.1. Never seen a program that comes with Windows that will use up memory. I'm not saying there wasn't a problem. but a fresh install of Win8 is no different than a fresh install of Win7

Win XP came out around 2000 and they just stopped supporting it so it will be about another decade before Microsoft stops supporting Win7.

I don't have my credit info for Apple and I can download all the apps. I created my account YEARs ago and I can download anything. I actually just downloaded two new apps this morning on my Apple iPhone.

The only problem is that google is still limited and not a lot of developers are developing programs for it. Programs like Photoshop and Lightroom are just a few that hasn't mentioned any works for Google OS.

I setup the Apple account when I got the computer for Christmas. You are correct. You do not have to enter any cc info at that time. Just a billing address. But when I tried to upgrade to Yosemite, I had to sign into the account and it would not let me proceed unless I entered the CC info.

As for the Win7, microsoft told me tonight it would not continue to support it much longer. If it is wrong, they are the ones that stated it.

The one thing that bothers me more than anything about the whole mess is, they are forcing me to upgrade. I have always been given the choice to do so with all of my other operating systems from microsoft. Even with phones, you have to approve the updates.

Best way to think about MS OS is every other OS is the one to keep and use and in between are "not polished public release"

Win3.x was good
Win95 was the transition to the start menu and desktop as we know it
Win98 was the polished version and fixes of Win95
WinMe was the transition to the newer start menu and media programs which was a flop as well
WinXP is the polished version and stable version of the media player and customization of the Start menu and better start menu shortcuts and recent items
Win Vista was the new layout and blah blah and that failed
Win7 is the polished and stable version.
Win8 is the transition to Metro and live tiles
Win10 will be the polished version.

I know there are more details to each release but thats the basic concept

I know if you bought a laptop or PC from a Microsoft store, they will update it for you for free by just bringing in your PC but if not then you have to download it and install it. Which I think is the right thing to do with Win8 being such a disappointment.

Or, you can do nothing and they make you upgrade when you go to the bathroom and come back and,,,,there it is. Telling you to choose how many hours you want to wait until it finishes because it will have to restart the computer to take hold

That is why I always do the "let me choose the updates to install" option.

yea I'm in New Zealand and we don't have MS stores.

But it shouldn't be that hard. They may even use the MS store to do the update.

I do this too only because my internet sucks and I want to make sure updates are not hogging my bandwidth when I need it most.

8.1 is great. Can't see the sense in going back to 8 which I hear had tons of issues. Oh I went from xp to 8.1, 8.1 is waaaay better. Change is good.

Thanks. I went from XP to 8.0. Took a little bit of time but like it pretty good. Never had a single issue.

8.1 nothing but issues

BOB was just a failure and didn't take off like the other OS.
Windows NT paved the way for Servers and Windows2000 server took over and was very stable and polished for servers.

Even with Vista and ME failing hard. I don't think they called as hard as Win8 to the point after a year or so of its released, manufactures gave users options to downgrade.
