Worth it to upgrade from T5i to 70D or 6D?

Be very careful........as I mentioned earlier when this lens is put on a crop body the field of view is nearly useless at the short end. You may want to take your camera to a store that has one and mount it and see what I mean.

Crap dangit yea I missed that, thanks for the tip. Although I think I would use it mostly outdoors anyway, and I already have an 85mm so it wouldn't be a big surprise or anything.

I may need to procure another nifty fifty (gave my first to my sister for Christmas) for indoor shoots where there's not enough room for the 85mm I have now. It does get in there pretty tight. Or maybe the 35 f/2.

The 70-200mm f/4 IS L is a great Lens, very sharp when I do my part! I bought that Lens when I only had the 60D. It would be a good First L lens but I seen your budget of under a Grand, you might be able to afford a 24-105mm f/4 IS L or a 17-40mm f/4 L would be good affordable L glass. They work great on a crop or FF Camera, just got to know your limitation for each type of Camera...............

I'd look at the sigma or tamron 70-200 2.8 over the canon f4. For portraiture, for me anyway, faster = better, even if it falls behind in other areas. F4 on a crop isn't very fast.

Maybe add a 135? 35, 85, 135 will be a killer lineup when you buy a ff, and you can make good use of them now with your crop.

I shoot with zooms 90% of the time because of the convenience. In my experience, 70mm on a crop isn't very convenient for events/weddings.

If you love it, dive in head first. But there's seriously no reason to dump tons of cash into it. Once you get going with lighting, you'll find all kinds of things to spend money on. Spend it there instead :)

awesome suggestions, thanks for the help. i'll look into the sigmas/tamrons. i haven't done much research on those, i mainly look at canon glass since it's what i know. i was practicing with my lighting setup last night too so hopefully i can hone that in before too long.
