What is your favorite all purpose walk about lens and why?
I have recently leaned on Tamron 18-270 oddly enough even after reading some very negative points about it I purchased it (not recent) and have found it quite sharp in all lighting situations and IQ very good. I also walk with my Canon 70-200 F4 which I actually love for reasons we alllll know.

just curious as to your favs and why

The Canon 85mm f/1.2 MkII. Although not an all purpose lens I've been using this as a walk around lens lately. It's a nice focal length and a challenge to use wide open. It's a sharp lens and produces beautiful bokeh. It's a lens that needs to be mastered and for this reason it needs to be used and not just left in the camera bag only to be brought out for portraits and studio work. Sometimes you get that cracking shot that just cannot be achieved with any other lens.

Currently the 40mm Pancake (on a 5D) because it's small, light and I can take it anywhere - and it'll do pretty much anything.

Might be nice if it were a bit faster, but then it wouldn't be a Pancake lens and that's why I bought it and use it nearly every time the camera leaves the house ...

Right now it's the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non-VC, and usually in the 17-30mm range. I also like my Sigma 18-250 OS, but prefer narrower depth-of-field. Oddly, I also had the Tamron 18-270 but sent it back because the chromatic aberration was much worse than the Sigma, at least on my copy.

At the moment i'm loving my 24-70 f/2.8 MKI on my 5DII however i'm trying to get used to using primes so aiming to use just my 50 f/1.8 for a few weeks so i can get used to the FOV and how it behaves.

If I had to choose it would be the 24-70ii f2.8, for its versatility. Of course there'd be many times when I'd want something wider, longer or faster. I find it kind of hard to leave the house with less than 2 lenses these days ;-)a

As a landscape photographer I shoot most of the time with the tripod and use MF lenses. When I walk around I use 24-105mm and it is light, has IS and is useful in most walk around situations.

For me: Canon 24-105mm lens. It is not my favorite lens (70-200 is special.) It is the lens I would keep if allowed to have only one lens.

My sister using a Canon SL1: Tamron 18-270mm PZD She wants a really good camera that is easy to carry about anywhere. I have been impressed whether outside at long focal lengths or inside wide and using the built-in flash.

I have considered getting a Tamron 18-270mm lens. I haven't just to prove I still have some discipline when buying "toys."

My recently aquired Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC on a FF (5DIII). Haven't had that much time to actually just walk around with it, but it'll be what stays on the body most of the time. Seems like the logical focal length range for general photography. Should pair nicely with my 70-200 f/4L.

It's typically the 24-105 lens but lately I've been using the 14mm lens.

Canon 24-105 because it covers the heart of the range I need with reasonable size and weight, and it has IS.

I take a bit of an odd approach, and tend toward just having my 85mm on a crop body as may most common lens when I'm out and about. I sometimes use the 70-200mm f/4, but it is just a tad unwieldy with the bags I currently have, so it usually doesn't make it along on general daily trips.

I used to wander around with my 100-400 L on a 350D just for shidz and giggles for a while... then nearly dropped it...
