I have a 20d that serves as a backup/walk-around camera. I like it because I can take it with me with a 50mm lens and not worry about it too much. I want to clean the sensor. Should I do it myself with a rubber blower? I have never had the sensor cleaned and just moved on to another camera. Even though I use other cameras for more serious work, I'd like to bring this camera "back to life" and perhaps give it to my kid. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Cleaning the sensor is a very easy process. The sensors in the 20D are covered by a low pass filter so you're not actually touching the sensor when cleaning. I know people who remove bonded particles such as pollen with scotch tape without issue - not that I recommend the method but just to make the point that it isn't as delicate or potentially dangerous process as some make it out to be. It can be unsettling at first but after a couple of tries you'l be an expert. Using a blower is easy and that may be all your sensor needs. For stubborn or bonded particles you may require a wet cleaning. Here is a great article that covers various methods of sensor cleaning. I hope it helps you out.

Thanks! Other than some dust my 20d has never stopped working. I consider it a cool camera to use, sort of like my old Pentax K1000.

Can you tell I'm nostalgic about old cameras?

Do a search on sensor cleaning, there are many different techniques. All pretty much start with a bulb blower first. If it hasn't been cleaned in a long time a wet cleaning might be the most effective.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
