What kind of PP did you do to remove the noise from using ISO 3200? It looks really good in your small image and I'm sure even better @ high res.

I want to guest blog on your Landscape / Travel photography blog, PM for details

The sky on this is actually noisier than I would have liked. I haven't printed this one yet but when I do I will go back and reprocess it a little differently. Because the moon was lighting up the sky the aurora wasn't terribly bright and the sky itself wasn't terribly dark, both combining to wash out the aurora colors. Any adjustment in post processing to make the aurora "pop" also added noise. So when I process for print I will not be able to push the auroa colors as much.

That is a National Geographic quality photo if I've ever seen one; simply outstanding!

Looking at other images of his on Flickr there appears to be others of this quality.

Dave, that's a really great image. The only thing better would be standing there in person. ;) Thanks for suggesting the viewing against the black background...that definitely makes a difference!!!

Capturing the Northern Lights is on my bucket list. Envious of you and this picture. Must have been something to behold with your own eyes watching it dance in the sky. This is one of the two best northern lights shots I have ever seen. Thanks so much for sharing and providing inspiration to me!

Thanks, it was pretty special. I ended up getting frostbite on eight of my fingers, still have some numbness in the tips of two of them four months later. It wasn't very smart of me to keep taking my gloves off every time I touched the camera...

As for the best aurora shots, the stuff done by Max Rive and Marc Adamus are pretty amazing. Marc has one taken from the same spot as mine that I like a lot better. Here are some by Max and Marc that are particularly epic:

Marc lists some good info on how he captured some of these shots too:

Thanks guys!

This was taken inside the park on a backpacking/photography trip. We took a helicopter in (instead of doing the 2 day hike).

Fantastic photo!

As this was a backpacking trip, what tripod did you carry with you? Any regrets or "wish I also had a..." moments when using it?
