A good compilation from Chromix's Steve Upton and Patrick Herold.
Enjoy!

We tend to forget when we think about our 8 bit image (or 8 bit monitor) being capable of rendering 16 million colors that perceivable colors are much less than that. The standard mapping of human vision, the CIE gamut, contains around 2.4 colors (at white point 6500K) but sRGB covers only 35% of CIE xy (see below), and this works out to about 0.84 million colors that we can actually see on the monitor (provided that it has a gamut comparable to sRGB - my Dell has a gamut that is a smidgeon smaller than sRGB in red, but a smidgeon bigger in green. My Toshiba laptop, OTOH, does only 79% of sRGB, so perhaps this explains his number for the PowerBook.) A wide gamut monitor will increase that number to about 1.2 million perceived colors (Adobe RGB is 50% of CIE xy), a significant increase but still far from the theoretical 16.7 million.
