I am trying to make up my mind on buying a second camera, I currently have a 7d and am thinking about upgrading to either a 7d mk2 or a 6d, I know they are 2 way different cameras but I am wanting to see if anyone on here has been shooting landscapes with their 7d mk2? A lot of people said the original 7d wasn't for landscapes but I have been quite pleased with mine. I like to shoot a lot of landscapes and portraits but I also have an active 4 year old daughter that i catch in motion a lot and shoot cars a lot too, so I am looking for the best camera to suit my needs without going to a 5dmk3 if possible. thanks in advance for any input

Will you be keeping the 7D or selling to help fund the new choice?

I recall debates that raged on about the 7D vs the 5D2 and 5D3 as a landscape camera. The consensus by those obsessed with comparison charts and technical data was that the 7D was inferior but when you look at the 7D landscape thread it is obvious that the 7D is a very capable camera for landscapes. I suggest that you give the forum a look for 7D landscapes. I have little doubt that given the improvements in the new version, though likely not the choice of a landscape only photographer, the 7D2 is capable of producing some awesome landscape photos.

^ is exactly right. Spend the money on glass and see some real benefit in IQ and/or flexibility.

If your already pleased with the 7d for landscapes you shouldnt have a problem with the 7d2. But landscapes are low iso, I dont think the 7d2 will be any improvement over the 7d for this purpose and if your 7d is already doing a good job shooting your 4 year old my recommendation would be 6d.

Your welcome.

The 7D is a very capable platform for landscape... perhaps not ideal, but it should get the job done in most circumstances.

The 7D2 has very low to nonexistent pattern noise at low ISO - lower even than the 6D. Clarkvision Review (external link)

It is also currently the best choice for astrophotography. But realize that in order to get the best out either the 7D or 7D2, you will need a lens with high resolving power. The lower pixel density of the 5D3 and 6D will let you get away with less than the best lenses, but the 7D series just gets better as you put higher quality lenses on them.

The 7DII should be great for landscapes. The 7D is no slouch and the 7DII has added a few more megapixels without impacting pixel quality and in addition it's got rid of the banding / pattern noise that many found so frustrating on the 7D, especially when lifting shadows. On the downside you can't use Magic Lantern (I assume) on the 7DII yet.

If you're happy with your results from your MkI, the MkII sure isn't going to be worse.

You don't mention what lenses you have. If you you have only EF-S lenses or don't have EF lenses in the FLs you want to use with the 6D, you have to buy new lenses as well as the camera. I have made a similar choice and finally decided the 7D2 was my best overall choice at this time. One of the big considerations was that my only UWA is a 10-22 and I shoot a good deal of real estate interiors so I would need to buy a 17-40 as well as the 6D or use my 50D when UWA is needed. The 50D is a fine camera but the technology is getting a bit old. My next body will most likely be FF, but until then, I'm very happy with the 7D2.

Here's a landscape near my home. I haven't had the chance yet to go out and really concentrate on landscape, but, so far, I am quite pleased with this camera.
