About 2 years ago I went full frame and condensed to a smaller kit with a 5D3 and fewer newer lenses. I had been shooting with multiple bodies prior to that. I was going to wait for the 7D2 to come out to get another crop body. It came out and I've still been hanging back making do with what I had. My daugther's flag football team is competing in the nationals in Florida in a couple of weeks... they are the defending champions. I didn't go last year when they won. I figured now was the time to get a crop body, and the reviews on the 100-400 II have been teasing me greatly. I've never owned the original 100-400 but always wanted something in that focal range. I will be a lot easier to bring that rather than 70-200 2.8 + 300 2.8 + TCs.

I'm pretty excited about the new additions to my kit, and haven't bought anything new in a couple of years.

Any others who recently put these two together?

You are not alone.

For wildlife, the II-III-II combo is super.

What's the III?

I'm guessing the 1.4X III.. it's part of my list along with the 100-400 ii...... Mid Feb for me. I already have and love the 7D2.

I see... I have the TC 1.4 II, rather than the III. I wasn't thinking it would make that big of a difference unless using with a mark II version of one of the big whites.

Yes, I meant 7DII-1.4XIII-100-400mmII. I don't know what the dif would be between the II and III versions of the 1.4X.

Somebody posted a quote from Canon's Chuck Westfall about the MkIII TCs and the 100-400 MKII. He said he's pretty sure there would be no advantage over the MkII TC.

The only reason I was considering the 1.4X III was because I dream about one of the MK II primes. I doubt it will ever be anything more than a dream.

Hollis, so if you were buying a TC for the 100-400 ii, would you just get the 1.4 II? I can pick up a used one for $200 almost any time.

here's a shot I took with the II + 70-200 f4 + 1.4III I cant believe the detail I can get at a distance with the 7D markII and this lens so I'm sure the new 100-400mm II is going to be smokin. this is a good 35 feet hand held in my front yard. once you get a hold of the AF your gona be smilin big time

Cool shot! (In all senses, and a bit too chilly for my thin antipodoean blood.) As much as I'm already enjoying my 7D2 and 1.4x III (with my mk I 100-400) I'm also hanging out for the new 100-400 mk II which I have on back-order. Damn: Canon marketing must really have targeted me: I've not spent a cent with them since 2008, but they'll extract $thousands from me in the quarter over Christmas / New Year! (Then again, they seem to be doing it the old-fashioned way, by producing products I actually want to buy - which is something of a change.)

Yup. Or I might look at reviews of the Kenko - but it would probably be the Canon MkII.

Congratulations ! They work well together. :)
I also have the 1.4 II extender and it works Very well with that combo. In fact, I really can't tell any difference in focus speed or IQ that is worth writing home about. VERY content with my copies!!
