3B, LF, CF, SS - Just a bit inside 1st base.

2B, 1B, RF, CF, Just a bit inside 3rd base.

Pitchers head on through the fence, or from the positions listed above, offhand side.

I shoot batters from down the foul lines, moving down as far as I can get while framing them OK with the longest lens I have. The idea is to shoot them and blur the backstop as much as possible. If the light is bad to shoot them from the face side, you can shoot them from behind and wait on them to come all the way around to you on the follow through. Face side is also better on RH batters to get them coming out of the box. See the example shots for what I mean.

You can shoot the catcher from the first two positions, also from the last. But if you are not set up on the catcher before a throwdown you will likely miss it.

Don't forget to shoot baserunners, but generally the best places to shoot batters are a bit too far down the foul lines for that.....but maybe just in fastpitch softball. You might be OK in baseball.

Every potential location will be out of position for one type of play and in position for another type of play. I got into the habit of moving every couple of innings , from outside of third base, than outside of first base, then behind home plate in line with a baseline.

An important point to keep in mind, baseball consists of more than the pitcher, catcher and batter. Some people are satisfied to create "baseball" pictures that document only the battery. However there's plenty of action on the basepaths, and dramatic, although technically difficult to capture defensive action by infielders. Unfortunately, the best way to capture outfield play is either to put yourself out of position to cover the infield or to carry an exceptionally expensive supertelephotolens.

Yeah DC Fan, I definitely want to be sure to get as many usable shots as possible. I plan on using a 70-200 II and pocket wizards on a 1dIII, and have it fixed on home plate, at least I'll be able to get the right handed batters in the frame. And then I'll be using a 1DIII and a 400mm 2.8 on a monopod for the pitcher and outfielders. It'll be my first baseball shots so hopefully I'll have things covered.
