So I have a trip next month, starting in Phoenix for a few days, Sedona for an overnight and full day, 2 days in Vegas and 2 days at the Grand Canyon. I have a 60D and shoot 98% of my photos with the 15-85. If you were to look at another lens to take (I have a T3 for backup so would mount the extra lens on it, unless I plan to use it then I would switch it over).

So if you were going what other lens would you take. Shooting landscapes and I have never felt the 15mm is not wide enough (I tend to stitch). Is there a cheap fast wide lens for night work?

Thanks in advance

If the 15mm is really wide enough then I'd take a 70-200/300 for that compressed look or occaisional wildlife if there is any. I also shoot alot with the 15-85 on a 7D, excellent lens, however I'd be reluctant to do a landscape trip without my 10-20.
There is the samyang 14mm f2.8 pretty cheap, but it is manual focus and you're not gaining an awful lot over the f3.5 of your existing lens, that's certainly not enough to persude me to get one, I guess it depends on how badly the hole is being burnt in your pocket ;-)a

The burning is there but its not catching the pants on fire just yet. I may just rent something so I can play around. Might need to be the 10-20mm since that is kind of the go to lens for landscapes, might as well see what the fuss is all about.

10-22mm on a crop for landscapes, definitely. Very sharp glass, too -- well, my copy is.

When I was looking for an uwa for landscape and astrophotography on my 70D an alternative to the 10-20 that I looked at and eventually bought is the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.

It's not the best time of year for Antelope Canyon but Page, AZ (Horseshoe Bend & Antelope Canyon) is only a few hours from Sedona. As for the lens, you can always rent something. I rented the 10-22 for my GC/Page trip a couple of years ago. The 10mm was use A LOT at both.

Canon 5D3, Canon XTI (IR converted), 24-70 f2.8L, 16-35 f4L, 50 1.4, 70-200 f2.8L, 100 2.8 macro, 430 ex & 580 exII speedlights.

Page and Horseshoe Bend were both ruled out as we already have 20 hours of drive time in our week.

Thinking renting the 10-22 might be the answer

Alright so I will be renting the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 to help out with some night photography and to see if I like going Ultra wide. Next question I have been thinking of picking up the 70-200 f4 for every day use. Would you find yourself using this much on a landscape trip? My only other lens over 85 is a 55-250 kit lens.

I often tote my 70-200 when I go out hiking/backpacking but mainly for wild life. Sometimes I find other good subjects for it too (flowers, portrait), but personally I don't use/like it much for landscape. In my opinion it's not that heavy or cumbersome to carry, so that is why I often bring it, even if I don't necessarily intend to use it.

If you did not own it would it be worth renting it for a landscape trip?

My first reaction would be no... but thinking about it a little more, I guess it would depend on price and what else I had/was bringing. I've never used the 55-250 (is yours acceptably sharp?), but I'd be temped to roll with that, in the event there is wild life or something else you need some reach for.

If it were me, with my crop camera (70D), I'd probably have the 24-105 (or 15-85 in your case) on it most of the time. I'm not sure I'd like 70-200 as my general purpose or every day use lens.

Yea its an extra $40 to the 11-16 rental. I am thinking I will just roll with the 55-250 which is small and light as a just in case. I plan to have the 15-85 on one body and the 11-16 on the other. My daughter and wife are learning on my older T3.

I know I'd be anoyed if I didn't have a longer lens with me, even if I didn't plan on using regularly. A once in a blue moon widlife event would surely happen right in front of you but be right out of reach for your 15-85. In 16 days in Norway in the autumn my 70-300 was probably only on the camera for half an hour, some sea eagles about, 15-85 75% of the time and 10-20 the rest.
I'd be worried that renting a 70-200L would make me think my current lens, not L, is rubbish and force me into wanting an upgrade! :)

My wife is worried about that too, however she keeps saying you need one of those white ones lol.

Well just pulled the trigger and rented the Tokina 11-16 2.8 as well as the Canon 70-200 f/4. Its one of my favorite parts of landscape vacations, is I get to rent some new gear to play with. Now I just need to get through 14 more days of work.
