hey gang

didn't get any results from a search on here

Been doing some nitetime comet photos over the last week and noticed when viewing the full size images and scrolling around
there are many hot ( bright red) and dead? dull pale white pixels

in a single image I counted some 15 - 20 of the red and many more of the dull white ones
is this common - normal ?
here's a 100% crop of a small section of an image with circles around the points of interest
have had the camera since June 2013

Lightroom automatically removes the hot pixels from my 5D3 images.

I never even see them.

Happy New Year guys

Hi copperny

thanks for the link, tried that and no success :(

greetings mclaren777

I assume you are referring to RAW files ? ..... I think I have heard that before ... somewhere :)
I can live with that.
It just happened to be the jpg files that I was working with when I noticed the hot pixels
and under normal bright daylight images its irrelevant but for star/astrophotography, there's a whole mass of extra dots on the image in jpg haha

I shoot RAW+ .... having the instant jpgs makes it easier for quick uploads to www without too much messing around

for serious editing I do use the RAW files with LR and PS

I guess it still boils back to the Q ... is so many hot pixels the norm or am I seeing many more than should be expected from a 1.5 yr old camera with <2000 shutter count ?

cheers
Dave

Even with no stuck pixels I always get hot pixels with long exposures. That's what long exposure NR is for. And even with that you usually want to do dark frame subtraction.

Only if exactly the same pixels are 'hot' after the camera has completely cooled down (or consistently over the course of several days) do you actually have any stuck pixels.

LOL no, that was pretty simple instructions
what it didn't say tho was what exposure setting used

of course my star photos are in the 10 - 20sec exp range and 1000 ISO and in them the hot pix were very visible
even after that sensor clean method
I did do a pic at 125th sec and 100 ISO and the hot pixels are not visible, whether they were before that clean process
I don't know

these are definitely permanent they haven't changed position or intensity in at least a week

thanks for your thoughts guys :)

Appreciated

Dave
