The wife wants something to replace her Sony H70 because she is frustrated with it. She is pretty much an auto settings shooter, but will turn her flash off when necessary. She is not interested in stepping up to a DSLR, but:

-wants something that is easily portable, smaller the better
-wants faster AF than she is getting now
-wants better IQ, especially in high ISO situations
-wants decent video quality, and hates that my 6D doesn't AF in video mode. And yes, we do have a dedicated vid cam but it is a non-factor.

The 5100 is pretty cheap lightly used, and it looks like you get a lot of camera for the money. I have access to a 16 2.8 pancake, which isn't exactly Zeiss glass but I didn't find it to be bad when using it with the NEX C3. It seems like this combo could be a decent solution for the money. I'm not looking to spend anything over $400 here. I've considered an RX-100, but It seems like the 5100 would trump it for everything but portability . . . can anyone chime in on the AF speed/shutter lag of the 100 vs the 5100?

While being my backup body wouldn't be the 5100's primary use, I do feel I would get some use out of it like this if I were to get an adapter for my EOS glass.

Thanks in advance for your input.

My only concern would be that the 16mm would be too wide for "everyday versatile" photography at that 24mm equiv focal length. I tried to use a similar setup several years ago with the NEX-5N and the 16mm, and I found it just too wide. But if it works, may be a good solution. There's also the option of getting the 20mm pancake which I think would be a better focal length for a 1-lens solution, not sure how much those cost on the used market though.

Not familiar with the H70, but what about the EOS-M? I think those still can be found new from various retailers under $400. Not sure if AF would fast enough though? I personally didn't have an issue with it after the firmware update.

At the RX100's wide end of 28mm equiv, it's f/1.8, so slightly more than a full stop of light than the 16mm pancake, so that should offset the smaller sensor size somewhat. The RX100's AF speed seems pretty snappy, but isn't the 5100's AF system the same as the 6000? So I'd assume the 5100 would be faster.

I just can't see a photographer used to a P&S being okay with just using a prime lens, esp one as wide as 24mm equiv. For that reason alone I"d probably gravitate towards the RX100.

I shared similar concerns, and thank you for confirming them. I am happy to hear the firmware on the EOS-M made that much of a difference, I thinking I will wait for a deal on one and try it out.

Thanks again!

I took advantage of a good deal I found on a RX-100 mkii, should get it in a few days via UPS.

Portability trumped all in the end, as This is the camera my wife will have with her through her work day as well as for casual use on the weekends. I am a little worried about the focus speed on it, which was a huge complaint about our H70, but most everything I have read say that the mkii still focuses faster than most any p&s out there.
