The number of Northern Cardinals have increased dramatically this week with the -10F temps and howling wind, used a wide angle on this pic to get them in the view finder. I only caught 9 in this pic but have had as many as 27 near dark which produced a terrible image. Often they are split evenly between male and female.
Following are two of each that got close to my camera.

Martin, these were taken 3 miles SW of Greentop, Missouri. I have a few Redheaded WP on my farm and many more 3 miles East on another one of my farms. The Cardinals are by far the most numerous birds I have.

Love the cardinals. Not too surprising that it's about a equal split between male/female as they are usually paired up for life. The woodpecker is actually a Red Bellied woodpecker, noisy little guys huh? We have tons of them here. The other little guys look to be Dark Eyed Junco? Great shots!

Wow, what a group. Looks like a Red headed and a Red Bellied woodpecker! Lucky you!

rwingsfan, I wondered if the Cardinal paired for life but never looked into the facts, almost always come in to the feeders in pairs. Look down the limb from the red Belly and you will see the Red Headed WP. Have far more Red Bellies than any other WP's.

Thanks CaptBob, took this shot just for proof that Cardinals outrank all others in numbers.

We do have a good variety here and the Cardinals add a bright spot to our very dreary winters. On those gloomy days a Red bird can cheer me up by just watching them.
