I have an older Canon Pro9000 printer. It is getting harder to find inks for it. Yes I can order it from B&H. But I wondering is there a big difference in its printing vs the Pro100, Pro10 or Pro1. I own the Pro1 has pigment based inks instead of dye based. But the Pro9000 has Green & Red inks and the others do not. So, has anyone done a true comparison between the older Pro series printers to the new ones.

Thanks

Rick

This may not be of much help, but I bought a Pro 100 on one of the innumerable 'giveaway' deals, and I took my Pro 9000 MkII to my office. The first few prints I made on the Pro 100 seemed just a tad darker than on the Pro 9000, but a quick tweak got everything back to normal, and comparing the same file printed on both printers look identical to my amateur eye. However, I understand that the Pro 100 is much better for black and white printing. I can't comment on that because I haven't done any black and white stuff since I tore down my last chemical darkroom years ago.

I love my Pro100, and I used to have a Pro9000. I can print on DVDs, and 8x25 paper (RedRiver). I haven't done side by side, but the dmax value on the Pro100 are supposedly very dark. If you are not in a rush, Canon usually has a firesale on the Pro100 once or twice a year (especially since the new Pro100s is being released).

I wanted the red and green inks too. Do not worry about it. Heck my 6ink epson r280 consumer printer had the same gamut of the pro100 which is very similar to your pro1. So no, red doesnt matter for color gamut. Maybe it might be a slight more pleasing, but its not that much worse.

Is it darker yes, but I guess that just adds to the B/w capabilities. Its not darkroom B/w, but pretty darn good for digital. There is not grain, but i think you can by specialty baryta paper from manufactures.

Again for red, its great and saturated when I produced a pure red print.

Another reason to switch is longevity of the inks. Not sure about your printer but is it a chromalife100? cause now there's the chromalife 100+ which is about 5times more resistant to fading. I heard terrible thing about the early inks that are dye based. But this only matters if you have your windows open to sunlight.

And if you have the MK1 of the 9000 the pro100 is going to be much much faster like your pro1.
And ink consumption is down as well. Barely eats any ink during cleanings. And is sooo quiet.

A good printer overall.

How can you print on the 8x25 paper. I would like to print on longer than 19"

Thanks

I realize it's now four years later, but what were the tweaks that got your pro-100 back to normal? My pro-9000 died and I replaced it with the 100. I don't print photographs -- never print b&w. I print scans of 2d art: paintings, illustrations, etc. I'm having a dickens of a time getting the colors to match, especially the greens. I had the 9000 dialed in perfectly, but none of those tricks are working for me. I truly mourn my 9000 every time I need to print.

Any help anyone can offer would be hugely appreciated.
