First of all, I'm delighted with my 5D3. But I'm curious whether anyone else has experienced the issue (maybe that's too strong a word) of the shutter release not having a firm detent at half-press. I've owned half a dozen Canons over the years and only the 5D3 seems to have a very sensitive shutter release; it's more like a progressive "spring" as opposed to the other cameras (even my new 7D2) having a noticeable "pause" at half-press. The Vello 3rd party battery grip even has a more pleasant sensation when trying to switch on the metering or wake the camera up. Is this unique to the 5D3? I shot a lot of accidental frames when I first bought it until I got used to the sensitivity.

I also have owned well over a dozen bodies and found it to be no less or more sensitive than a 1D series and completely different than a Rebel series. Yes the 5D3 is soft, but was the exact same as my 6D and my other cameras. Perhaps yours is a bit different from the factory or bought well used (but taken care of). I bought all of my cameras used and never new so that might have caused that.

Bodies: Canon 5D3 - Canon 1D4

Extras: 2 Neewer TT520 Speedlites - Manfrotto 3021BPRO and ballhead

Nope, brand new and sealed in Canon original packaging. Maybe my 7D / 7D2 are the odd ones out. :-)

Could be. They are from the same line so it might make sense. Also, those are cameras that shoot 8FPS and 12FPS (I believe), so sometimes a super soft trigger isn't the best thing :P. I honestly don't mind it and almost prefer it, but if I ever give the camera to a friend or something, they normally don't half press it long enough to focus. In this case, the half press option being harder would be nicer :/
