Hi, i'm new here and pretty new to photography.
I've bought a second hand Canon 1100d (thought it best to start with something user friendly and cheap).
Now the problem is this, the autofocus doesnt work on the lens, you can here it trying to focus but it won't. It works fine in manual mode.
I've cleaned the contacts which didn't change anything. After looking up on google, i've come to the conclusion that some of the gears have stripped some teeth off.
So what i really want to know is will any EF, EF-S lens fit. Im'm quite happy to stick with a 18-55 lens. I don't have a lot of money so am looking to buy a second hand lens off of ebay. I just want make sure i get the right thing.
Thanks for reading.

Yes, Canon's EF and EF-S lenses will fit. So will a number of lenses from third party manufacturers do, provided they are delivered with Canon EOS or Canon EF mount (the same thing, different names).

there are, i think, three versions of that lens with each having a bit better quality than the last.

EF-S 18-55

EF-S 18-55 Mk II

EF-S 18-55 STM

i would avoid the first at all costs, the STM is a significant upgrade over the Mk II especially if you are considering doing video. In fact it is almost a situation where you would avoid the Mk II if doing video.

There are several more, but not all versions have been available on all markets.

EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6
EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 USM
EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 II
EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 II USM
EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 III
EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II
EF-S 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM

Once they started getting IS they got really good, especially considering the low cost.

Then there are a few alternatives, too.
EF-S 17-85 mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Longer range, better build, same image quality as the earlier 18-55 mm lenses.
EF-S 15-85 mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Longer range, good build, good image quality, higher cost.
EF-S 17-55 mm f/2.8 IS USM Same range, very high image quality, larger and constant aperture, high cost.

As stated before, it's also possible to use EF lenses, but I think we are running out of budget already here.

Heya,

Hunt for an EF-S 18-55 STM on the bay or some where, used. For the cash, that will do the trick.

Otherwise, if you're into fixed focal lengths, you could consider the EF-S 24mm F2.8 or the EF 40mm F2.8 STM.

If budget permits, you could even look into an EF-S 18-135 STM.

Very best,

I've the older kit lenses and the newest 18-55 STM. The STM version is a huge improvement over the previous kit lenses. I also have the 18-135 stm but I'm not as wowed with it as the 18-55 at the same focal lengths. It was also not cheap.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
I'm going to try and get a second hand 18-55 stm. After looking on eBay it seems there are a lot of wrongly advertised as stm, people just seem to add stm to there 18-55 ll IS lenses.
I will have to be vigilant when choosing.
Thanks again all.

As Anders said above, the big difference in quality came with the introduction of the 18-55 IS lens. I have the first IS model of this lens and the image quality is amazing for the price. Any of the later 18-55 models will be as good or better.
