Weight restriction for carry on (camera bag) on Aer Lingus?

We've been checking into a trip to Ireland. However, when we went to the Aer Lingus site, we saw that there is a 10kg (22 pound) weight restriction for carry on bags. That seemed weird, so we called...and it was confirmed.
I find that hard to believe! Has anyone on this forum ever had any difficultly with this issue?
(I know that I travel with more than 20 pounds of gear! Especially to a place like Ireland!)
Thanks.

Hi Steve,

You probably won't get weighed, least that is my experience. As long as the bag looks light you should be fine. Something like a Lowepro Runner 350 AW they won't notice, however if you are pulling a roller then they might. One option for traveling with lots of gear is wear a big coat (one with a few big pockets) you can put a few heavy items in the pockets as they don't weigh you just your bag. Also if you are traveling with someone else your can always split the gear a bit for checkin.

Once you are through checkin you can repack your camera bag as you like it.

Yes, a number of airlines have even LOWER carry on restrictions! Many with 7Kg (15 lb), one with only 11 lb limit!

When my wife and I flew on Air New Zealand a number of years ago, our carryons were weighed at check in, and we had to offload some things to our checked bags...they cut me some slack and let me on with a 7.5Kg piece (7.0Kg was the official limit for carryon item)

Seems so bizarre. I've traveled to many places with my Think Tank International rolling bag and have never had a problem. I am/was surprised to hear about the limitation on this particular trip. On the other hand, I was planning to scale back with gear on this trip. But, when you start out with the 70-200 and a couple of other lenses, it adds up pretty quickly.
I'm going to do a test run packing my gear in the next day or two to see what it weighs.
Thanks for the responses!

Lots of airlines with a 7kg limit unfortunately! This is keeping me from buying more gear as I have many more opportunities to indulge in photography while travelling than at home. Being on the move four to six months a year makes things more and more difficult.

Just curious...what types of gear have you put in your checked baggage?
I've put Canon flash units in before, but I'm assuming it's a no-no for lenses and bodies.
Anyone with experience packing gear in checked bags?
(I'm thinking of carrying a camera roller as a carryon and a camera bag as a personal item. Does that work?)

The dimensions allowed:
Max weight 10kg (22lb)
Max size 55cm H (21.5") x 40cm W (15.5") x 24cm D (9.5")
Plus one small personal item: Small handbag, laptop,
duty free or baby changing bag.
Max size 25cm H (10”) x 33cm W (13”) x20cm D(8”)

The 'other' bag is a reasonable size so as long as you are about that size you are good to go.

What works 100% is to stay within the size and weight limits of the airline you travel with (see the post above). If you are ready to take chances and/or haggle with staff you might get more stuff on the plane. Deep pockets (literally, not metaphorically ;-)a) in a large jacket can offer a last minute partial solution if you get stuck when your other luggage has already been checked-in.

And yes, for me body and lenses as well as batteries, mem cards, 2.5" HDD for backups belong inside the carry-on.

Flew Aer Lingus from Paris to Dublin this summer. Had my ThinkTank Streetwalker HD with 5D Mark III and 7D bodies with 17-40, 24-105, 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II, TS-E 24 L plus other goodies. No problems and a nice flight.

The only thing I check in a suitcase is a tripod. I spin the ballhead off and take it in the camera bag. Don't put your camera gear in the checked luggage.

I fly Aer Lingus quite a bit as I have family in Dublin and I bring either a Domke F2 shoulder bag or a small Kata backpack as carry-on. I've never had anything weighed and both bags are well within the size requirements Kim posted above. Aer Lingus staff are friendly and relaxed and you should have no issues. Enjoy your time in Ireland!

I just got back from Ireland via Aer Lingus a few weeks ago taking an F-Stop Satori with everything you see I'm my sig, plus a GoPro, monopod and tripod strapped in. Weighed in at ~33lb. Fit in the overhead compartment just fine and got no looks or grief from staff or other passengers... Not saying to ignore the regulations, but my experience was that I had no problems going there and back, both on very full flights..

Edit: The staff never weighed my bag, I did it myself before leaving. And as others have mentioned, it's a great airline to fly!

Thanks for all the feedback and advice! I feel a bit more relaxed... And I also decided it's not a bad idea to hold back a bit on the gear I bring along.
As a note, I saw a video featuring Mark Wallace where he talked about switching from Canon to Leica and slipped in a remark that he carries his 70-200 Canon lens in its silver zip case in his checked bags. What?!

Absolutely looking forward to the trip to Ireland!!
