Is it my imagination or has the 6D escalated dramatically in status since its introduction in November of 2012? I remember it being bashed continuously for months! A crippled 5dIII! Inferior in every way! Now in many circles it's being touted as Canon's premier FF camera (at least regarding IQ). Why this apparent change-of-heart throughout the various photography forums?

People have actually had time to use the camera, and have a better understanding of the image quality that it can produce. IMHO a lot of the bashing we heard at first was from people that wanted a camera that would perform like a 5Diii but didn't want to pay for a 5Diii. A lot of people simply don't need the AF capabilities of that camera, and a lot of them went for the 6D instead(myself included).

Heya,

Everything gets boo'd or worshiped at first.

Then after the paces are done, the chips fall and the reality sets in.

The 6D has the ISO capability and quality that bests most of the rest of the Canon line.
The 6D has the image quality that bests or equals the rest of the Canon line.
It has decent autofocus abilities, superb in the dark.
It's affordable.
It's smaller and light weight.
Has interesting extras, like WiFi.

It's just easily shown itself to be one of Canon's best for cost' cameras.

As for the 5D3 comment, if you take away the AF system of the 5D3, what is the 5D3 without it?

Very best,

right after the announcement i was looking to upgrade my XSi with no decision as to whether i was going FF or stay with a crop. I read, and read, and read about all the canon options. It was pretty obvious that the majority of folks complaining about the focus system did not own the camera. There were also those that tried it out in a camera shop or rented it for a weekend.

Granted, i am not a sports photographer, but i literally just finished editing a full day's shoot at a cyclocross (bike) race. I used servo, and gasp, all points for a number of sequences and it did not let me down.

It's a fine camera and a steal at current pricing.

Yea a similar process is going on with the new 7D II currently. Lots of comments being made on both sides. It will settle out I believe and be a wonderful camera.

I purchased a refurb 6D and got it 2 weeks ago. Sure looked new to me. My wife is loving the images over our 60D so much that she has forgot to give me any crap for spending the money!!!!

Took it to the aquarium and had no trouble capturing pictures in really low light rooms, dark tanks, etc. Being able to use high ISO values is a terrific feature. Am able to take photos in situations I had to totally avoid with the 60D. Only negative is that my 70-300L and 24-70L sure don't reach out as far. Going to cost me for a longer lens. ;)

Yea I was hesitant to purchase it as it feels almost like a light weight toy compared to the 5D III and 7D bodies and has far fewer buttons. Now I have no regrets as it focuses fine even with the outer points for my usage. Would love it to have the flip screen and joystick as future upgrades.

the results speak for themselves. The camera isnt as flashy as the 5D3/1Dx, but the sensor is just as good, even better than the 5D3. The camera is not as enjoyable as a 5D3, however, 99.9% of all shooting scenarios, I can achieve the same results. The 5D3 is a much more enjoyable camera, and if you've got the funds, enjoy it! It's a real shame that the 6D has a better sensor than the 5D3, I think canon kinda messed that up, makes no sense.

I may have missed something, but on what basis is the 6D sensor better than the 5DM3? As I say, no idea, so just looking for an answer...

It has very slightly better high ISO performance. In most cases you wouldn't notice the difference but it does perform better at the extreme high side of the ISO range.

It is amazing to me how much you can crop a 6D image taken with a good lens and still have acceptable quality.

6D, 6DII, 70D, 80D, R10, RP, Lumix DC-FZ80 and a bag full of lenses.

Physics=> same sensor technology+lower pixel count with similar size sensor = larger pixels (SNR will be SLIGHTLY better)

Interestingly enough it is the name in digital xray detector world too...to an extent.

I don't own a 5D3, so can't offer an opinion on that. IMHO, the 6D is fantastic. Just like the 60D, I knew it was a camera for me as soon as it was announced. The AF on the 6D is excellent. It is fast, accurate, and works in the dark. It is hugely better than the AF on my 5Dc was. That said, I still prefer the look of 5D files for low-ISO stuff. I wish I'd kept it.

If your referring to proffering 5Dc low ISO files to the 6D I can totally see where you're coming from. I borrowed one of my friends 5Dc's a few months ago and shot a concert with it and was floored by how good the <ISO 800 shots looked. Anything higher and my 6D chewed it up and spat it out though.

Many people will focus more on value for money that the actual product itself, which is why the D610 received much more praise at first. I could see from when the 6D was first announced that it was a entry level FF and the specs made sense. The way the designed it was so that the 6D and 5D3 could remain different and unique in a sense (6D being the low light camera, 5D3 being the mid range camera that can suit everything you throw at it).

Time has helped show what the 6D is capable of which is why it's so praised now. I know I love mine and I'm very happy/content with it!
