Was trying to do some research, is there any reason why I shouldn't buy two light stands and get a cross bar as opposed to a dedicated background / drop stand kit?

A couple I was looking at:

Calumet 10ft heavy duty
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007IPC58?psc=1 (external link)

Facnierstudio 8ft kit
http://www.amazon.com …ywords=backdrop+stand+kit (external link)

LimoStudio kit with backgrounds
http://www.amazon.com …ywords=backdrop+stand+kit (external link)

Or I'm open to suggestions. I don't have any backdrops at this time either. Was probably going to purchase a white and grey.

You haven't mentioned whether you're looking for a portable setup or a studio setup. You don't need stands for a studio backdrop so I'm assuming you're looking for something portable, I'd suggest a collapsible crossbar like the Manfrotto rather than a crossbar that is made up of three or four separate pieces. Faster setup and no chance of losing pieces. If your shooting space is limited, C-stands will allow you set up the backdrop closer to the wall, though they will cost you a lot more.

It would be portable as it would need to be broken down after each session.

Ravelli ABSL is solid and inexpensive. I have it and it's good.

I have this one:

http://www.bowensdirect.com …ckground-support-kit.html (external link)

It is 2 lightstands with 4 section crossbar, very sturdy, all tights down nice and secure and comes in a bag.

So if I need 2 extra lightstands they work perfectly for that too.

I think I'm going to go with the Calumet as it's only $90 and the cross bar is sectional. Unless, there's a reason why this system is not decent quality? I was going to buy that with the Savage 53-Inch seamless paper too.

I have this crossbar mounted across two light stands (Matthews Beefy Baby), holding a fabric backdrop 9' up: very sturdy and transportable.
