After 4 almost 5 years of ownership, and two Afghanistan combat tours, I think my 7D has given up the ghost. I hit it pretty hard against an armored vehicle by accident of course.

I exited the tactical vehicle, grabbed my camera bag from the rear of the vehicle and with the hustle and bustle of goings on, my rifle, and other gear, proceeded to slam my bag hard. I have no clue the condition of my lenses, but my camera won’t come on. I got a flicker on the screen which I assumed was the start up ‘cleaning’ message, but that’s it. Basically take the batteries out of your camera and that is what mine is doing.

I have left the battery out, and pulled the watch battery, going to let it sit for a good amount of time, and then try putting the batteries back in. I won’t be back in the US for about 6 weeks, so I can’t do anything at this point. Don’t even know if it’s worth it when I’m home to send it to canon.

I do have insurance on all my gear, and I am now waiting to hear from my insurance company on what their course of action is for me.
…wish me luck

Good luck James, I hope you have coverage for accidental damage.

Thanks rrblint,
My gear is fully covered; just hate having to do an insurance claim.

Thank you, although I haven’t made it back yet, this is my 3rd combat tour here, and this tour isn’t over for another 2 months. My 7D has endured 2 tours.

And my insurance agent says:

There is no deductible on it and it doesn't affect your rates. The policy will pay for repair or if it can't be repaired then it will pay for the replacement. The amount they will pay will be what it costs to replace up to the amount we have it insured for. CANON EOS 7D 18MP CMOS DIGITAL SLR insured for $1854.

Bk2life,
I hope you don't mind me asking.
I was speaking to my insurance agent today and he told me that the photography business policy only covers equipment in US and Canada. (Allstate)
Can I ask what type of insurance you have for international coverage?
Any other insurance sugfestions/ info would be appreciated.
I know about Replacement Cost, Mysterious Loss and Accidental damage, and Errors and Omissions.
Thanks in advance.

I’ve taken thousands of pics. I’ve posted a few here; I think if you click my name you can see some. I can post a link to others as well.

I have had the same agent since I was 17, I am almost 40 now. I am with state farm, and they have taken care of me well over the years. I had asked before I ever brought my gear with me if it was covered and the answer was yes. Not sure if that is for everyone, or someone who has the years under their belt as I do.

think I might be leaving the crop behind and going to a 5d3. Full frame just seems much more related to how and what I shoot.

Glad to hear that you're covered for the camera, sounds like you have good insurance. I did chuckle when I thought how it might look on the claim form "I accidentally hit an armoured vehicle with my camera bag" sounds a lot more original than the " I accidentally knocked the camera off a table/chair/bridge" which are probably on a lot of claims that go in

Hope the rest of the tour goes well and you get home safe

Glad you got the camera sorted and as others have said stay safe. My nephew is set for another tour sometime soon. He's a Para Engineer. Although of course all of the British Forces were supposedly coming home.

Likely the camera is repairable (perhaps unfortunately). Even if they have to swap out the main PCB it's not that expensive - although compared to a used one at $600 it's a good chunk. Compared with replacing for $1800 though, it's not.
