I'm considering stepping into the professional photographer world. I thought that starting off as a second shooter would be a good way to learn the ropes so I can be better prepared when I start working on my own. Do I need a website to advertise my skills or does a Facebook page suffice to start with?

IMO the less you have the better. Not many are going to want to hire someone with big dreams of becoming a photographer (aka, new competitions). Grab your best 10 shots and go shop your services around to all the photographers in town.

I would agree, less is better. If you know a professional suck up and get them to take you out.

don't be afraid to drive to a different market. I'm in Baltimore/DC, but all my 2nd shooter jobs when I was starting out were in Philly or Northern NJ.
