I lived a stone's throw from the DH plant & spent a lot of my time watching the Caribou prototype go through it's STOL tests by hiding in the bushes just short of the area it used. That didn't go so well because if the pilots saw me they called plant security & they would come and drag me off plus call my father to come & get me. I did get the plant tour while waiting for rescue & never got grounded. I think my father knew he'd be wasting his time on that.

Fokker DrI Triplane on takeoff.

Propping the Fokker E V. Note the plane handlers ducking the castor oil, along with the handy-dandy fire extinguisher. Definitely not period-1918 on the Western Front. Vastly different radial engines on these two 100 year old time machines.

Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, Red Hook NY.

Very nicely captured for both of them.
The E.V parasol is running a rotary engine, where the crankshaft is attached to the airframe, and the crankcase (and cylinders rotated).
The Triplane is turning a radial engine as you noted.

Yes. You can see the cylinders blurred on the E V as well. I believe the Sopwith Pup also has a rotary engine where the propeller is fixed to the crankcase with the crankshaft fixed to the airframe. This kind of engine doesn't have a conventional throttle and is rather distinctive sounding.

Golden age of experimentation.

Yes, always great to hear an original rotary engine - as opposed to a radial engine - and the distinctive on/off all or nothing sound of the 'binary throttle'

As I understand it, the 'throttle selector' on the Fokker E V was a bit more sophisticated than on/off; the pilot also has a selector switch that allows him to choose 3, 5, or 7 cylinders active. The Sopwith Pup's rotary engine is binary.
