Happy birthday to the Spitfire! 85 years ago today since its maiden flight at Eastleigh Airport in 1936. Taken at the West London Aero Club's Members Day in 2018. (Running out of Spitfire pictures now!)

Sri Lankan Airforce 70th Anniversary displays on the Galle Face shoreline, Colombo
Wednesday 3rd, Thursday 4th and Friday 5th March 2021.

Each display is run in the last hour of sunlight with the setting sun as the backdrop. This doesn't make for flattering photographs and the haze adds another challenge when the aircraft are far away, but here goes with some shots from Wednesday's show.

Chengdu J-7 (MIG 21 clone). This old school relic from the 1960s still in active service looked epic tanking along the shoreline at very low altitude, smokey trail behind it leading down from the heavens. Silence. Silence. Silence. Shhhh. BANG - and then the crackle of full afterburner as it headed up in to the sky. So close and so fast, I have never had to pan so quickly in my life - and as you can see, couldn't keep up. (Image changed from the original - I had a better shot from the second pass)

Well it would be rude not to.... and if the story is believed, so glad it wasn't given it's creator's originally proposed name...... "Shrew"

I always had a soft spot for those PR drivers. The only defense they had was their stealth and speed. Their courage was second to none ! I believe that their rear view mirror was used more to ensure they weren't leaving a vapour trail than looking for Krauts? After all, one begot the other init!
