I see some Spitfires with props that turn counter-clockwise (from the pilots perspective), normal for British aircraft and some turning clockwise.

Do these have American engines fitted?

The Spitfire had two engines, the RR Merlin and the RR Griffon. The Griffon propeller rotated anti-clockwise when viewed from the cockpit whilst the Merlin rotated clockwise from the same viewpoint.

Boy, that's tough from a pilot's perspective. Generally a pilot conditions himself (or herself) with rudder correction due to the direction of rotation of the propeller (right rudder for clockwise, left rudder for anti-clockwise).
