I think knowing is one aspect - when I tried it, I felt a bit of a fraud plus it didn’t look right to my memory’s eye so never did it again but that’s a personal thing.

However when I look at photos I tend to see the lack of sky graduation (the remnants of art classes where the teacher lambasted one if your “sky” was too constant) or the view through the canopy glass, which to me is the biggest give away especially when it’s a bubble canopy.

Thanks Colin. I'm not sure that I'll be using it either. I just cannot get the sky to look natural. For the first time too I'm seeing a huge variation in colour between my monitor and my iPad screen, maybe I need to calibrate my monitor again. Anyway back to grey and dull skies it is!

I made my peace with the vagarities of the sky in this temperate isle a long time ago...

Our local annual airshow doesn't have a ground based component, but the airfield had a small WW2 display of it's own years back. Here's a shot from that:

Hi Cygnus,

Thank you for your kind reply. This photo was shot on June 2013 during an airshow at Volkel Airbase in The Netherlands.

Cheers,
Rene.

I tried it a few times but was never happy with the results, especially around propeller blades and, if I may say so, I see a little of that back in this picture and some halo's or artifacts around the wings as well.

So for me it doesn't work so well. May after some more training or getting more experienced it could improve, but I'm just not patient enough for that.

Cheers,
Rene.

A P-40 at the 2017 Reno Air Races. Several warbirds were there to perform and races as well, so this one has a big 42 on the side. The third shot is my experiment with sky replacement. I didn't like it in color, but the b&w version didn't seem too bad.
