*sigh* I miss Chino. And all the other air shows I used to make it to when I lived in SoCal. But Chino was special for the old warbirds.

Belas, what a great tribute to the F4 -- a fantastic powerhouse of an aircraft. The FA-18 seems girlish in comparison.

And speaking of tributes. Nowadays I wish I would have shot many more pics of the F-14 than I did. Because I have only a very few real keepers, and they're all film. And unfortunately the F14 is history -- totally. Well, except for a few that might still be flying around in Iran. Here are six of my best, none of which are critically sharp unfortunately. These were taken at the 1987 Point Magu Navy Airshow. Point Magu is on the Southern California coast, next to Ventura. I still clearly remember it was a rather dreary overcast day, so I was struggling with slow shutter speeds, cuz I was using long lenses and Kodachrome 64. The lenses were a Canon FD 300mm f/4 and a Sigma 600mm f/8 mirror. The cameras were a pair of original Canon F-1s.

To think we used think Kodachrome 64 was brilliant for image quality. I shot a number of airshows with K64 and even one or two with K25, which seems slow, but I often think I could do with a real ISO 25 setting sometimes. Mostly I used to shoot Ektachrome when I shot colour as I processed the E6 at home, something you couldn't do with the Kodachrome process.

I hear you. Been going through slides I shot back 40 years ago and thinking what I could have done with the cameras I have now. Purchased Kodak 5250 (I think that was the designation) in 250ft rolls and loaded my own cassettes. Did the E6 processing. Thought ISO 160 was way out there; occasionally tried pushing to ISO 320.

I have some slides taken in the 1950s by a relative while on USS Antietam of their helicopter operations. He used Kodachrome 64, there are some pretty damn decent helicopter shots with rotor blur. I was impressed.

I love the Tomcat! I was sad when they retired that airframe. Back in 78 when I was in the Navy, I visited a buddy in Norfolk that worked on the Tomcat and I got to get very up close and personal with it, that is one huge airframe!

Thanks for sharing the Tomcat photos. They bring back memories from my time in the Navy when I was stationed at China Lake. Though we didn't have any F-14s assigned to our base, the F-14s from Top Gun would land at our base after playing around out on the ranges. I even had the chance to see an F-14 do a air-to-air missile shoot on one of our drones. I miss those birds.

Your timing was a bit off in number 1. Should've had that prop vertical to maintain the symmetry! (sorry, couldn't resist, great photos, love the close-up views) :)

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.
