ok im gonna get smacked for this one but no biggie...

I havent been around for a while and my camera has been sitting for some time. I do not have an extensive lens cost into Canon so not too worried...

I have scoured the web high and low for certain things and for me I just cant find it so thought... hey why dont I ask here.

I wanted and waited for the 7dm2 to come out and had a truck for sale. still not sold so havent bought... It is bonus time again in 3 months so this time it is time to get a camera as my t2i is acting up last times I used it. anyway...

what I am requesting is anyone that has either of these cameras and shoot NIGHT SPORTS!!!!! please post some pics for me... here is my delema...
i do not have a 70-200 in any f.... so...my readings and research have left me to what I am thinking... but pics would change my mind...

which camera to go with for my needs?
currently my t2i if used at night for deck hockey I grab the camera and simple... AI Servo, 85mm 1.8 @ 1.8, 1/640, ISO 1600... shoot, crop and cleanup. Pics are not that great but for family use totally usable.

I waited for the 7dm2 to solve my issues as the 1dx is out of my price range. the price of the Sony and specs are so tempting! so either...

Canon 7dm2 - $1800 and save for another year or 2 for a Tamron 70-200 2.8 (as I have 50mm 1.8, 85mm 1.8, 24-105mm f4, 55-250mm (think it is bad... long story for another day)

Sony 77II - $1000 (just missed b&h $950 with sony grip!)
Tamron A mount 70-200 - $1500

yes going Sony I will have to spend a little bit more but the cost of the 70-200 on top of the 7dm2 doesnt seem doable.

got some pics please help me out... our sports.... all either indoors, or daytime to darkness... only looking for dark as I know they all will excel at daytime...

Travel soccer (U9 and U16)
Deck Hockey (on foot with ball)
MMA - Indoor Mixed Martial Arts

appreciate it all... and WOW the site changes are going to take a bit to get used to...

I'd be curious to see how this new AF system performs. I imagine that's the bread and butter question that needs to be answered to see if it's up to par with the likes of the 7D2.

It sure looks good on paper!

Just a thought but have you looked into the lens selections available for both systems?
I mention this as a local (ex) Sony A77 user recently was looking for a 300 F2.8. He researched the Sony option and then bought a Nikon 300 F2.8 + a D7100 for considerably less than the Sony lens alone.
I am not saying that you shouldn't go for the Sony option just that you should carefully research the lens options of each system. Unfortunately Sony does not offer a lot of options so make absolutely certain that your current and future needs are covered before you decide.
Good luck choosing!

John I understand that... currently my needs are not met on lenses... I need a 70-200 2.8 IS (Tamron $1400?).. would like a better camera for tracking insports (7dm2 is $1800) - $3200

my lenses I am looking at getting with this new setup..

please let me know if I am wrong.. I got thick skin and looking for input

Sony A77II
Sigma 18-35 1.8 - $400
Tamron AF 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro - $770

only decision is focal im missing in.. I use my 24-105L mostly.. so either
Sony 28 - 75 2.8 - $800
Sony 16-50 2.8 - $500

want to keep more to 2.8 but if better option..
Sigma 24-105 - f4 - $900

Please remember I make $0 on this as a sports dad with a very limited budget
so if I stuck with Canon and get 1 lens and 7dm2 - $3200
Sony - 1 camera and 2 lenses (excluding missing focal) is - $2100

so $1100 cheaper - would sell off my current gear to buy other stuff...

I like everything I am seeing on the Sony A77ii as in specs vs the 7dm2... placing the body and 2 lenses $200 cheaper than just the body...

thoughts?

Looks like your Sony option is your best bet. I don't see how you'd be disappointed.

pick up a second hand 7Dii imo. Then a second hand tamron 70-200, those seem to drop price very fast for such a super lens.

really hard to pick up second hand sony A mount stuff, small market, hence I would stay away. Heck, with the canon system, you can even take baby steps. Get the lens first, see how that works out for you. Upgrade body if the lens isnt enough. You get the benefit of trial and error and not too much money to front right away.

Between the above two choice I would say Canon 7d Mark II, for example is sufficient see some social network as flickr and similar.
Actually a comparison on term of AF system performance between a top DSLR camera and a mirrorless camera is impossible.

7DII and 70-200 f/2.8L non-is. If you're shooting sports at 1/640 and shorter times, you won't need the IS for exposure, it just helps with stabilizing the viewfinder. Plus side is you get Canon's USM instead of third-party autofocus so you can get the most out of the 7DII's new focusing system.

Have to agree, the 7DII and then you can get the 70-200 f2.8 non is used for around $800 or a bit less, so $2600 or so in that system. Street price on 7DII thru canonpricewatch.com is 1550 or so.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

Hmm well you already have several EF and ef-s lenses that are useful. And if the budget is your constraint, then why not pick up a refurbed 70D and a ef mount tammy 70-200 2.8. The AF on the 70D isn't quite 7Dmk2 but it is no slouch, it would keep all your current lenses relevant for use, would allow you to add to the EF lens collection which will in the future allow you to pick up a 7Dmk2 when the prices drop more?

I'm going to have to agree with werds. I debated between the 7D mk II and the 70D before ended up with the 70D. I too am a sports dad on a limited budget, that gets limited even more by the wife feeling what I have is more than good enough already. I decided on the 70D because I felt the AF was more than adequate the fps was more than enough, the improved high ISO over my T3 was good enough. I also felt the extra $1,000ish for the 7D mk II wasn't worth it for what the differences were. I take pictures of my kid playing football day and night games, track day leading into night, wrestling in a poorly lit gym.
If you are not in a huge rush keep an eye out for a Refurb 70D they've been down in the 600-700 range a few times on Canon's site, then pick up a refurb or used 70-200 2.8 without IS you should be able to find one about $1,100-1,300. Or you can find a used 70-200 F2.8 IS version 1 for about the same price range as the non IS.
