Birds can survive with one leg. This was taken at the end of winter and it still looked like it was doing well

Agree. I've seen many birds with one leg. Herons also seem to be prone to injuring their legs - I've seen many without the claws on their toes. Also small songbirds.

Very cool shot, davholla! That's a major handicap for birds that spend so much time getting their food from the water. I personally think this individual has an extra strong constitution.

Thank you.
You would think it would be handicap - it was in a park with lots of food - although also lots of competition. It looked healthy.
Black headed gulls wintering in the UK migrate in the summer sometimes to Eastern Europe - sometimes just a few miles (migrating a few miles seems a bit of a waste). They are often very faithful to the their wintering grounds

This was in its wintering ground I didn't see it the next year but of course death could have been caused by something else like a Peregrine or Skua. Also maybe they don't always come back. Also I didn't spend that much time there so I could have missed it among the hundreds of gulls.

Apparently there was at that time another one legged black headed gull in the park but I didn't see it.
