So are the GBH picking off ducklings? Around here it seems that the Wood Ducks start with 12-15 hatchlings but most of the little guys don't seem to make it to adulthood. I've seen hawks pick them off. I figured the Herons were as well, but have not witnessed it.

I think they do and reed warbler nestlings - I've even seen a photo of a grey heron with an adult reed warbler in its beak. In the UK, pike take many ducklings, too, and grebe chicks, so it seems that they are on a lot of menus.

Here in Florida I have seen GBH eating rodents many times. They also LOVE water snakes. And baby birds they swipe in the wetlands. I have photos of all of this. They really are top level predators around here. They will eat anything, not just fish.

And yes, I see them all the time but I still like photographing them. Especially with chicks, like in my last post which was from the weekend. We see nests every year.

Here the gulls get the ducklings before the herons can, they are a far worse threat for the ducklings than herons.

The ducklings have multiple predators, as do all baby birds. Life is tough out there. Egrets and herons will eat anything.

Very true, just where I normally shoot the gulls outnumber the herons by so much that they are a much bigger threat to the ducklings, saying that the herons do occasionally get one. Interestingly gulls eat pigeons which herons don't* and herons eat rats which gull don't so they don't compete 100%.
*In Hyde Park, maybe not in other areas.
