Maureen, may I ask where you took the photo of the Bison? I wanted to go after these guys this fall in the Dakotas but can't get away from work.

I was sitting in my car in the middle of the road surrounded by a large herd of them. Nothing to do but take pictures. Here is a cell phone visual

Maureen how many cars get mauled.
Grazing animals love rubbing their heads on things, slurping on rubbers, windscreen wipers, etc.
That huge head would devastate a front end of a car with one slow swipe.
Not referring to head butting, just rubbing it's chin across it.

I have never seen a bison butt or harm a vehicle but once I saw a bull elk put his antlers into the side of a car & punctured the tire. It was rut season & the bulls are very strung out on testosterone

I saw that. We saw a mama black bear kill a just born elk calf in Yellowstone back around 2014. It was crazy...bet the elk calf didn't even take its first breath before the black bear came out of the shrub and grabbed it.

I was surprised with sound I never heard the Elk yelp out in pain from the attack.

Is that normal with any or all animals when being attacked like this?

I think all animals shriek when they are attacked. We saw kills & chases every day in Africa & every animal squealed, brayed, growled or made a noise. It is pretty ugly to see a kill but the sounds make it more brutal.

BTW, I just booked a trip back to Africa in 1 year....anybody interested in joining me?

Thank you... I was surprised not to hear it as I did hear other sounds on the video... a little bit of water movement as the bear was behind the elk... that had to be very painful when the bear was biting into the backside of the elk....

The person that took the video was breathing pretty loud understandably, but there are a few faint whistles made by the elk, or another elk nearby, or I have been listening to them day and night for the last four days, so it could just be in my head. The video is kind of sad but it really is the Elk's own fault for being so delicious.

Everybody has to eat. Spending 8 days out in the African bush really made me root for the hunter & I wasn’t too sorry about the hunted.
