I LOVE the hippos! We didn't get too close to the river because it was raining & we were looking for the baby zebra. I am hoping for some more up close shots next time I go.

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

These were in a pool with a high bank on one side. We had to walk through some quite thick bush to get to the bank, where we were safe from the hippos. Our guide was a bit nervous due to the thickness of the ground cover and we didn’t stay too long. We had to freeze on the way back out, as the guide spotted some suspicious movement in the undergrowth. It turned out to be nothing of note and we returned to our vehicle safely. We had visited in the morning on a previous day, but it was too cold and we only saw the hippos’ backs.

We also saw some close up on a boat trip on the Matlabas River. There were some loud snorts and the hippos dived down and disappeared.

Naughty Boys misbehaving. We had a few close encounters with these.

I saw 2 on land in the bush up close....the only animal I was a bit nervous around. I'd prefer to see them in the water.:-D

I was nervous about the elephants when they got too close and too frisky.

This was a quick grab of an animal we were not expecting to see as they are predominantly nocturnal. Quite a heavy crop and not the best quality, but the only shot I have of one and I haven’t seen many of these on the forum.

Nice shot of the fish eagle. We often saw a pair in a tree near the river, but they were too far away to get a decent picture. The jackals appeared too quickly for me. A pair ran in front of us, one carrying an impala leg.
