Honey Monster, those Were not our vehicles but we had something similar but with a large open sun roof. They are now discouraging the cheetahs from jumping on top so as the cheetahs got very close & acted as though they were ready to leap up, our driver pulled away. I sat in the very back because it had the largest opening....twice as large as the middle row but it was the bumpiest. I was willing to sacrifice the bumps for the open space.

Apparently the closed vehicles are preferred in East Africa due to the fact they have more rain there than in South Africa. Makes sense but there is no substitute for planning a trip at the right time of the year for the places that will be visited. If you do that weather is probably not such an issue. Apparently there are more late afternoon showers in the Mara than say in a place like Sabi Sands in the South.

Anyway just what I was told!

It was winter and the dry season when we were in South Africa. We had clear blue skies, with almost no clouds in sight. It was freezing cold first and last thing, though and up to about 25 degrees Celsius by midday. In the summer I believe the rain comes mainly in thunderstorms and then it can be very heavy.

We were dry the first 3 days, then after lunch every day we had a booming downpour. Lasted 20-30 minutes & was gone by the time we headed out again at 2:30.

So all this posting about Africa has me finishing up the 400 pictures I still have yet to process. Finding surprises along the way....can’t wait to share some.

It also got me itching for some wildlife action so I just booked 5 days in Jackson Hole, Wyoming this summer. I have no self control.

Are you going with a guided outfit, or are you doing it by yourself?

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Myself! I have tons of experiences in & out of the National Parks all over this country. I love a wildlife road trip. I booked an Air B& B in a house in Jackson but I will have to walk to the community center to use their showers:-P

Can you find what is lurking in the background? I almost dropped my shorts when I saw this photo for the first time last night! I had NO idea the cheetah was there.

really makes these photos come alive when you see shots like this.
The vivid reality of life in the scrub, or whatever they call it over there.
Fantastic shot.
Certainly see why one would get engrossed and hunger for more

I like seeing the animals in their natural setting and close ups. The giraffes in Marataba were quite dark in colour.

Part of our local herd of up to about 30 elephants that we saw every day and often several times. There was a wide range of ages in the herd ranging from small calves, through ‘teenagers’ to the matriarch. There were a few very young ones in the herd (2 can be seen here), with the youngest being about 6 weeks old according to our guide.

Nice entries, Mike. I love seeing them in their environment too. Luckily, in Africa, you have both options of close up & with scenery.

Love that image, Maureen. I had a similar situation in the Kruger Park a few weeks ago. I came across a huge elephant bull in full must. I got off a few shots then decided to hang back a bit as he seemed a bit unsettled. Only when I was processing the images a few days later did I notice the leopard in the background framed by the elephant!
