As Maureen says, sometimes the memory outweighs the quality

It does not look like it, but the grass must be 6 feet high here??

Has to be somewhere in that region as they were sat down.

I do not remember for sure, but I am thinking I have never seen a Giraffe sit down before. Thank you for this answer!

Forgot to mention that I did find it strange that they would do that in the Serengeti - giving up their visibility advantage. I know lions bringing down adult giraffes is rare but one looks like a juvenile and they are fair game for a pride. The picture was taken in 2012 so memory may be playing me tricks but it was taken out of a Land Cruiser so roughly on a level with their heads.

We also came across 3 giraffes sitting down in the late evening. The guide explained that the giraffe has a tendon in their neck that allows them to hold their head up without tiring their neck muscles. I believe they were sleeping like this. I wonder if they took turns to sleep with one always on guard.

These are majestic animals. Most of the females we saw had tracking collars. Cheetahs are now endangered and the reserves want to try and keep track of them. We also saw this with the alpha female of a wild dog pack. These are also very endangered. I am not sure how the tracking helps the population, but perhaps it allows rangers to see if they are travelling to areas that may be dangerous for them.

We need to conserve these amazing animals.

One of our safari guides thinks cheetahs in the wild are down to their last 2 generations. Our only hope to keep this species alive is breeding them in captivity. So tragic. They are so magnificent!

Back in ‘13 when we were in Chobe there were a lot of giraffes. A lot.

We saw some in Timbavati in ‘18 but not nearly as many.

I have some more that I will need to dig out, including a ‘little’ one. Because of their height it is quite difficult to decide how to shoot them.
